Motorplan extension?????

Hi all,

I need some expert advice.

My motorplan is expiring at the end of April, currently the dealer I purchased it from is having issues transferring the plan onto my name from November.

I wanted to also take it for a checkup before the MP expires looks like that wont be possible as it is on the previous owners name.

Based on your or friends experiences (anyone really) would it be necessary to extend the motorplan?

I did read other member posts and the general opinion is to just save for a rainy day if the cost of extending is large like 20k+

I'm also contemplating an aftermarket warranty like Motorite or something.

The car is a 2011 125i (e82) with +-84.5k km

Thanks in advance everyone

The dealer should not be dragging their heels on the plan transfer... what if something had happened from November 'til now?

Extending plan has worked for me but everyone has an opinion. Spending R30K to cover a drivetrain worth many hundreds of thousands is a no brainer. Very few schemes can match motorplan integration with BMW. This is of course assuming you have no desire to mod the car etc...

However on other cars it can make sense to just save the R20K for a rainy day.

First step is finding out what the plan costs to extend. If it is even slightly similar to Liquid Capital or Motorite then I would go with Motorplan.

I didn't extend mine, nor did I get a warranty. I decided to set aside the funds that I would have spent, for incase of something going wrong. It's enough to cover most things except for MAJOR problems.

It's always a bit of a gamble... Spend the money on motorplan and nothing goes wrong? Well then you lost out. Don't spend the money and something HUGE goes wrong? You lost out.

At the end of the day it's up to you if you want to spend the money or not. You will most certainly have some peace of mind if you get the motorplan, which is something I miss, haha. But as I say, no troubles for me without it.. but I do have the financial backing if something goes wrong just in case.

One can never be sure, do what will make you more comfortable.

I'd be really upset if I were you, the plan is there for peace of mind, and for them to be dragging the transfer since November is either a sign of their incompetence or them hiding something else ?
what happens if you have a major issue with the car tomorrow??

Hi Bud,

Just a silly question, assuming the dealer you purchased from is a non BMW dealership. Can you not take your deed of sale / signed offer to purchase to BMW directly and have them update their system instead of waiting on the dealer (time is clearly running out).

Secondly I will always choose some type of motorplan, its all about personal preference anyway.

According to my knowledge when purchasing a BMW on M/Plan it has to go for a 20 point quality check before it can be ceded to your name {this will give you piece of mind as purchaser that there are no issues or comments that a dealer may be hiding} or private seller as well this costs in the region of R1,200.00

So that's why the dealer you bought from is maybe dragging their feet as when it expires they will not be liable for this cost or exercise, depending if this was included in the deal, and it should have been as they knew the car was still on M/Plan and I would imagine they advertised as such???

As far as M/Plan extension goes I agree with the other comments find out how much to extend and weigh this up with after market warranties bud.

save R20k (what the mp will cost you) , then something breaks costing R50, 60, 70k....where is the balance coming from.

i'd prefer the MP thank you very much - a aftermarket warranty will cover SOME cost, but nowhere near what replacement parts cost on a newer BMW.

It is possible but there is a charge of +/-R1200 for the Transfer of Motorplan which is a rip off in itself

The cost is for the inspection last I checked. You can't just rock up at BMW and ask them to change the owner on the plan regardless of whether you have paid for the car or you pay them R1200/1400/2000.

This is actually potentially complex since so much time has passed. If there is evidence of damage/mods/even wrong tyres (just look at some of the sub 600K M5s) then good luck getting them to sign off on it. The selling dealer will say it is the owner's fault and BMW is under no obligation to transfer anything.

SrC should get this resolved ASAP and push the selling dealer to resolve.

Thanks guys for the reply's.

I'm going to take the car and title to probably Supertech in town or go to BMW Mt.Edgecombe to find out whats the story as Ebo suggested, do the inspection and hopefully the transfer. I'll pay whatever fees and send the bill to the dealer I bought it from for reimbursement.

Luckily the car is in my name so BMW should have no issues with it being with the bank etc.

I hope nothing was hidden when it was sold to me, no comments when I checked and no obvious damage, never put it on a lift however and inspect, runs bomb tho, for now(touch wood:praise:)

I will look at the cost of the MP vs aftermarket and decide.

Most likely I will extend the MP, I'd sleep easier knowing it's factory covered and also when it comes to resale in future it might help.

Again thank you all for the reply's will update as I go along.
