Mo's E39 530i Individual

It is so so so nice to see an E39 getting the attention it deserves.

Those belly pans you can remove and chuck because over time they will become more brittle and start drooping again. This is a problem on ALL the m-sport models. The E39 sport might not look like a very low car, but the front wheel arch liners that form that part where the fibreglass job was done is incredibly low to the ground on standard suspension. My new ones were damaged within a month of replacing them.

Props to Mo for spending the cash needed to get her into top shape.

Those tyres look so noisy with that V-pattern. The car will be dead silent with better tyres on.

Enjoyed this thoroughly. I want my 5er back badly.

Sorry that you have inherited such a backlog of maintenance on such a special car, but props for manning up and making things right. All the best for the project going forward!

Besides the crashy suspension from cut springs sitting on her bump stops the car drive straight and true. Performance is there and it really is a great drive. Got to drive her a little today and she pulls strong. Pity bmw can't build cars like these anymore.

They did a DAMN good job with the E60. So I have hope.

When they deleted the dip stick and added turbos they lost their soul. Now they no different to every other car manufacturer.:thumbdo:

Sign of the times dude. A manufacturer has to stay competitive. Yes we're enthusiasts and purists. However we do represent a small portion of BMW's actual customer base. They have to do their best to keep the masses happy and that means remaining competitive

The one thing that set bmw apart from all the others was that they made awesome power from a normally aspirated setup. Other car manufacturers had to resort to turbos to compete with bmw but now bmw resorted to turbos to compete with those manufacturers to stay competitive as those manufacturers couldn't build a decent NA setup to save their lives. Now you cannot get a bmw without a turbo and that spells the end for enthusiasts like me who love a proper NA setup. Cars like the e39 and E60 were the last great bmws built and unfortunately we will never see the likes of great cars like these ever again.
Honda, who I consider the best Japanese manufacturer also stayed NA when all their other counterparts resorted to turbos to compete have now also resorted to turbos so the best German and Japanese NA manufacturers have sold out leaving enthusiasts like me to stick with the older cars, never wanting their new offerings. It's quite sad really that the NA engine is dead. :(

To some degree, I can understand an immature 19 year old cutting springs on his Citigolf to impress his friends. But cutting springs on an E39, or any BMW for that matter :RedNo:

Anyway, guess it will be both springs and shocks then. Beyond age, it would also explain why the front shocks are shot.

That's the trouble when a novice watches Gas Monkey and mistakes a BMW with a 1960's rust bucket.

I'm happy to see this beautiful car getting the love and maintenance it longs for.

As always, cracking work Warren.

Will be watching this thread closely. Keen to see a proper revival with the absence of many E39's these days.

Plus it's a diesel so a turbo is required.

Time for a GT86 or a new MX-5:floggin::rollsmile:

I agree with you on the Honda front..

Their NA engines were so good, and now they have also sold their soul for snails

Two last pics before she leaves. Such an elegant car, E39 has really grown on me after having this girl in the garage for a few weeks, the Individual really does make this car stand out, my family's E39s were never Individuals so I never gave them a second look but this one with the rare colour demands a 2nd or 3rd look.

Mo, may I wish you many happy KM in your beautiful purchase. It will be nice to hear your thoughts on the old girl in the new year when we fit the Bilstein B4 and H&R springs.

Thank you again Gizmo for the amazing work.

I love this cars engine. It feels ultra smooth and refined. Yes, after driving several 3.0d cars, you get used to the torque, but somehow after just a few minutes behind the wheel of a 3l straight six, you adjust your driving style. I’m surprised at the gearbox in this car too - it feels very quick. Don’t recall any of my older E46/E39’s feeling this way - was always a slightly lazier change in the other cars.

Despite the shot suspension and almost worn tyres, this car still feels very smooth and planted on the road. Just goes to show what a brilliant chassis BMW built. When coming to a dead stop though, it gives the game away - you can feel that there is no rebound left on the shocks.

I made a decision to keep the 17s as well. Will be putting on a set of Falken FK453 after a brief discussion on options with Shaheen. Will also be going back to OEM sizes: 235/45/17 in front and 255/40/17 in the back. Time permitting will have the tyres fitted tomorrow afternoon and have the wheels checked at the same time.

Left her parked off for now at work, until the tyres are sorted. Then need to do roadworthy the next day.

Great progress you making Mo.

Seems the car has been neglected for some time, and I think its big of you, to get her back to where she needs to be, instead of just flogging her again. :clapper:
