SIGH SIGH SIGH & ONE MORE SIGH, FFS.

This morning I went for a drive, came back & then had to go to the varsity. Started the car up & heard a strange noise while it was still in park, changed to reverse & the noise was harder, still while standing still. Reversed out of the drive way, changed to drive, & the noise continued, but when the car is moving even slightly there's no noise.

I drove straight to BMW & had them look at it. They say one of the pulleys is gone & recommended I change all the pulleys while their doing the work, so another R4700. This is the first money I have to spend on the car.

So while the service manager took the car into the workshop to get it checked out, he said the car "skopped vas" & the gearbox light came one & they have to get that checked out again. This after the car was there for 2weeks & I had the car back for 3 days. :cursin:

So we went & checked again & the gearbox light was off the next time I started the car.

I'm really pissed to say the least. My 30 day gaurantee from Dmetri motors is over & whatever happens now I'll have to pay for it. I told BMW that I'm NOT ahppy, because they had the car for two weeks & this was suppose to be fixed on Dmetri's expense, but because the 30 days is over they will tell me to suck/stick it.

BMW said they understand & they will check the gearbox out & we can talk after that. Probably meaning your going to getting a fucking surprize brother, prepare yourself.

EISH, I feel depressed.

Sorry to hear...if you're in Jozi, I can send you my mech's number. He will get it sorted for you. He owns a workshop/chop shop and a parts-shop in Wynberg and does the most amazing work I have ever seen.

Let me know!

Thanks bud, but unfortunately I'm in Bloem. I'll definitely have to get someone to work on my car, because BMW & Dynotech will bankrupt me.

Dude, that is crazy! pity you are not financed, or you could contact your finance house and have them withhold payment to the dealership.

Yeah, I'll never ever in my life buy another car cash. NEVER. I've saved for freaking ever & now I sit with this crap. TBH, it will take a miracle for me to buy another BMW if this keeps going on & chances are I'm just the unlucky guy that got a lemon, or the previous owner just drove seven kinds of shit out of this car.

I don't mind maintaining a car & I knew it would cost money, but within a month of owning this car it cost R20k in repairs, even though I only have to R4.7k for the pulleys & I really hope it's just that. I'm going to give BMW all hell if they charge me if there's something wrong with the gearbox.

Just came back from Dmetri motors (the place where I bought the car). I have to say, this oke have ate tons of my shit & he's always friendly & helpfull when I get there.

He phoned BMW & asked them whats going on. The gearbox control unit will go down to Cape Town to get fixed, Dmetri is paying for this (hands up to the oke  ) he also asked the workshop manager regarding the pulleys & he also phoned Goldwagen what the pulleys cost. Goldwagen said the small plastic thingy majig with bearing in costs R100-R200 each & the BMW workshop manager said they can replace just that & it will be fixed for a lot less.

I'm pretty negative to think that my car was more at the garage than it was @ home since I've bought it. Hopefully this is the last straw, because if it is'nt I'm trading the BMW in on something else. Maybe I'll shoot myself in the foot & take the A3 1.8t standing there.

Dont give up man...be strong. The problems you have had so far are not too bad :)
From what I have heard, Audi's are worse!!!

Sorry to hear about all your issues but dont let a quote from BMW get you down, it's their job to get as much money out of you as possible. Use BMW to diagnose the problem and then take it to a good mech to sort you our for much less.

Guys, if you were me, would you guys even consider trading in the 330i auto in on a manual or even a Z3 3.0? Even if it means I have to take a knock of R10k on the original purchase of my BMW?

EDIT: Or fix the car now, hope there's no more issues & the moment I get autobox issues I convert it to a manual.

Dude,

Simple fact, change the oil on that gearbox now and you are not going to have trouble with the gearbox.

I did a lot of research into this, and yes those box's die on hard torque, but are good for 300 or 400,000,I have seen some with more.

Spring for a filter and oil change, and your sorted.

They did a oil change on the gearbox when they did the gearbox contol unit. Eish, I feel used, but not in a way a women makes you feel.

I really hope this is the last issues with the Bimmer.

In my view, you are taking just as much risk in buying the Z3.

Who knows what will go wrong with that.

If I was you, I would keep it, if the body and interior is neat, and the car is maintained, yu should not have that much crap with it, go google premature failures on the 3.0 motor, and your not going to find much.

Those motors are really nice, they are not under powered, so they dont work that hard, and they are also not exactly kicking out kicking out 500 to 600Nm, meaning that they are not overstressed.

Here is the issue, its a risk no matter what you buy. You buy a low KM car stil under motorplan, and your gonna get screwed with depreciation, like 60 to 80k a year in some instances. It might not be a cash item, but you willl loose that money regardless.

Further, it sounds like you bought your car towards the bottoming out time of the depreciation curve, right time to buy it.

Dont think for a second your going to get better value with an Audi, fantastic cars, I love them and I have owned two, but audi also do not keep resale value, they bring their models out too quickly, so your going to loose with an Audi.

The only car that I did not loose too much cash on was my Merc, but then again, bleh, it was a really nice and comfy car with all the trimmings and good handling, 500Nm, good looking, but it had no soul.

So you figure you ignore the big 3 and go for something sensible like a VW or something, take that 1.9TDI jetta I had 2 weeks ago, car was 3 years old, did 95,000 and destroyed its gearbox, agents waned almost 50k for the gearbox rebuild.

The last thing to keep in mind, BMW does not repair, they replace, and then they mark it up, your alternator needs bearing or bushes (which are perfectly acceptable wear parts), instead of spending 400 bucks to have it reconditioned, they will charge you 8k for a new alternator, and its the same with everything.

Meaning that if you look, you can get most things fixed for a lot less then agent prices, and we here on the forum can point you in the right drection.

Things can and will go wrong, your coil packs could go tomorrow, control arm busings could go the day after, but you risk that wi any car, your alternative is to go pay 250k for something new (and get raped by depreciation)

Keep it man, from what I have hard, its all minor things, if you are really worried, go look into some of these aftermarket warentee's but in my view they are crap as well open a seperate savings account, put 2k in the for 6 month, and then change it to 500 a month, and you build a nest egg while earning interest on it..

KEEP IT

LOL SS, you made my day :) (not that I get a kick out of other's misfortune)

Thanks LZ, yeah I guess I'm a bit trigger happy atm. I love the BM, but damn. With bimmerman & SS's issues mine is minor, so I guess I can be happy.

I do have a Motorite warranty, but like you said, they are crap. They barely pay anything, but then I have to add, with all the crap that took place the last few weeks, they actually paid for the MAF replacement, the full amount, so I already fgot my money's worth.

I just spoke to Werner, the BMW workshop manager in Bloem & he said if it happens that the auto box gives in, it wil cost R18k for the refurbishment of the box & you get a 1 year warranty on it. I think I'll be driving the E46 for a long time to come, even if it cost me some bucks.

SS, just out of interest. Did you have ANY issues regarding your auto to manual conversion?
