Modification notes 1: Fire protection

I have not posted a decent thread in a long while. I will be sharing a few modification ideas from my scrap book and hope the community will find it useful.

I (always) hear stories of cars that caught alight for no reason. I will also always remember a very good varsity pal of mine burning to death in a car crash in the early 90s.

Driving a modified car makes me even more aware of the idiom "prevention is better than cure".

But it could also be useful when one may have to assist someone else in trouble. I recall a car catching alight while parked on the side of the road in Epping. A nearby taxi driver took out his fire extinguisher to assist but the extinguisher was empty...there was not even a sound coming from it... So having some form of protection could help yourself or someone else in an emergency provided you have the necessary agent to control the fire. :=):

Race tracks are also becoming quite strict and don't allow you to race without a fire extinguisher.

Anyway here are some pix of the kinds of extinguishers installed in my cars:

First the BMW OEM extinguisher:

The one we probably all have at our offices and homes:

The fire-stryker which I prefer: Its light, portable and can be stored in various places in the car; its maintenance free and has an unlimited shelf life. BUT you have to practice with one (yourself) to know how it works. A video will only help a little. Best is to strike it up and see how it works.

Having been on fire training courses before (Because Fireman (not stripper) well maybe))
Something like this is imperative.
I think someone needs to chime in with a small sales pitch?!

I recently bought the fire stryker and it's very small and compact. Glad to hear that it is also MSA approved as this was one of the things I still wanted to find out.

26 July, TheFanatics Race Day - ODI Track has requested that each race car must have an extinguisher inside the car.

Nice thread Charles!

I must thank Spiro who handed out fire extinguishers to the attendees at the 2014 BMWFanatics Birthday Picnic. I still have mine and have transferred it from the E90 to the E36.

Im a firm believer of an extinguisher in a car
I have also done the underseat one in my e39.

About a year or so ago I was traveling on the N1, the were bags of cut grass that blew onto the highway and got caught under another guys car. It ignited from the heat of the exhaust luckily I stopped just in time to put it out without any serious damage to his car

A very informative thread once again sir, well done:clapper:

Where can one purchase one of these Fire-Stryker type extinguishers?Autozone or Builders Warehouse perhaps?

I'm loving how compact the Stryker is:coolShake:

I think its imperative every car has an extinguisher, I fitted one in each of my cars and brothers cars, even my classics.

A small powder or co'2 is only around a R150 at Midas or GAME, PnP.. ECT.

Go out and get one, you'll never be sorry.

Just my 2c.. I always try to fit them inside the cabin, normally at your feet. I think its a better option, you never know when you get trapped in your car in a fire and cant get to the boot. Flipside is in an accident you may not be able to get the extinguisher free if mounted just front of the seat, so footwell is a good option. Just a thought.... 2nd unit in the boot wont kill anyone so put one there too..

Be safe out there...

Pics of the extinguisher in my e39, was like R100 on special at builders and the bracket is fixed using cable ties.

Barely noticable from the top
Even less so when the front seat support is extended

Cant recall. Was done too long ago. I bought it from the Bmw dealership after spotting it in one of their aftermarket catalogues.
