Well it depends what you want from a car, i would take the M3 simply because of the fun factor! however the Gti will be cheaper to mod, if you a straight line racer the Gti would also work but if you like the bends then you need an M car.

Go turbo, so G5 also its newer technology- when u want to upgrade there are good local hands on tuners.

if you want to drift take an m car- if you want to race these to cars the m will have its ass handed to him by the GTI?

Stock for stock , M3 wins in every department . No brainer to me cause I'm not into the whole modding scene anymore .

If you can find a decent E36 then no brainer.

If you have a GTi in your garage you have a good car. If you have an M3 in your garage, you have a legendary car.

I have owned both and my personal take on it. I had a E36 M3.2 that had basic mods on the car but pulled like a steam train up here at altitude. I then decided to buy a Golf5 GTi and do a full K04 (bigger Turbo) upgrade. Yes the Golf ran really nice and the DSG box was really something to admire with loads of fun.

G5 made a healthy 240kw at the wheels whilst the E36M3 made a mere 165kw at the wheels. Although it was night and day in terms of power but if I had to do it again. I would rather keep the M3.

Now Im not saying the G5 was not nice. It was a nice car but the whole drive of the car as a whole compared to the M3 was just no fun in it all
Also to note was the fact of FWD vs RWD. Turbo vs NA.

Its mostly a personal preference and mostly my biased opinion that will make me take the M3 time and time again but even with that said. I would not mind having a K04 GTi in my garage. GTIs when modded are lethal. The newer generation G6s are proving with smaller mods they are a force to rekon with.

So yeah personal choice of cars here. If I had to offer advise I would say buy the G6 GTI DSG and keep the M3 locked away as a Sunday drive car.

If I had to offer advise on having the funds to purchase just one car. I would say G6 GTI DSG. It has all the newer technology in it. I wouldnt look at buying a G5GTi , its old tech that had megatronic issues with the DSG Gearbox along with cam follower problems.

Just remember that every 2nd asshole these days owns a Gti.
The Gti actually sells more units, than all the other golf put together... :dropjaw:
