What a rollercoaster! Having read your various car threads, it feels like a mistake to have sold the Cayman. Especially once the gearbox was sorted out. Anyway good luck with the journey, the right car will come along

Circumstances change and it locked up too much equity for a toy. Also, my roads were crap (this has improved).
Given current needs, a low price toy is more feasible.

Out of curiosity, would this car pass a roadworthy inspection with the clutch and brakes in its current state?
Roadworthy inspections are not what they used to be.

I went to Cafe9 when they produced the report and they explained all the issues to me.

Cafe 9 showed me the condition of the brake discs and it was true to what they reported.

For the clutch, they showed how they tested it. What I originally mistook as good clutch feel (granted, I last drove a manual many years ago) was actually bad clutch feel.

Anyway, lessons have been learned.

If anyone is considering a used Porsche from a non Porsche dealership, you should insist on a PPI from Cafe9 and also visit them to discuss the issues. Very honest guys.

Good call bud, truth be told, even the facelift is more than a decade old now, so might see more coming onto classifieds.

All the best with the hunt!

Good call! Happy to see you did your homework and didn't buy a potential lemon.

Note to self, these cars are expensive to run with doing basic maintenance.

Definitely, most dealerships bypass the RWC part by having an inside man, however was just thinking that if the car would not pass a Roadworthy test, then there should be no issue with cancelling the sales transaction and getting your deposit back.

If you don't mind sharing, what did cafe9 charge for the inspection they carried out?

Agree.
However, if you buy one cheap enough, the maintenance can be absorbed. The average service cost is not that bad. Just the major maintenance stuff (which is not that frequent really) is a bit pricey. However, prices vary between aftermarket workshops, so best to shop around.

I was told just recently that Porsche SA likely offer reduced service and maintenance rates and parts prices for Classic cars. A 986 is regarded as a classic now, and from what I hear, Porsche is keen to support the used market for these cars (and other classics) with preferential service rates. Something to consider for 986 shoppers. Not sure when the 987.1 will be granted classic status.

Will they refund your deposit though..it's always stressful to get it back
They knocked off a portion of my deposit to cover some "reasonable fees". I thought it would just cover the petrol cost from driving the car to Cafe9 and back. But, seems that they added an hourly driver charge and other bits and bobs to the fee. I am getting the majority of my deposit back, less R1,400.

The refund still needs approval signatures, etc, etc, etc. But seems like will get it by month end.

Not a major pain though, compared to the pain of having to fork out more money to fix the issues on the car.

Lessons have been learned and school fees have been paid👍
