mini cooper s R53 (TURBO conversion)

hi guys since the supercharger is inefficient and the power output is not up to standard. I have decided to go the TURBO ONLY route. Many guys overseas have been doing this and have seen about 300 to 350hp on the stock internals.

I have bought a few things so far (GT30 garret turbo, dump valve and intercooler)

***very important, can the electronic throttle be converted to mechanical cable throttle so that i can use a gotech pro instead of the drive by wire system.

what i want is a view point of this situation and what should i be looking out for.

also do i have to go with an electric water pump or can i use the R50 cooper pump (from my knowledge the blocks are the same)

Your advice will be appreciated

thanks

Sure they can make lots power goingbthe turbo route.

I know Tune Tech have sone a few.

Personally I think it would take away the fun factor from the R53.

The linear power delivery of the SC makes the car "seem" slow but with pulley upgrade, cam, chip etc they go really nice.

Plus one of the things I loved most from my R53 was that whine from the SC. Always put a smile on my face.

Create a project thread and give us updates.

I love them mini's.

DVST8- the supercharger whine I will miss a lot...true the fun factor will be lost in one way but a whole new dimension will be created with all that power in a mini.

I will create updates as soon as I can but this project is going to take me a while with all the fabrication and stuff.

Blue beastie- as for the R56 the engine is not strong as the R53. People say the R53 engine is bulletproof, let's see.

Agree on ur R56 Comment, The R53 jsut feels so much stronger.

Await the project updates.

Go check out www.nam.com lots of good Mini advice there.

probably too late seeing as you already have parts but you could replace your eaton M45 with a M62 and make about the same power i have no idea whats involved though...

Pretty much plug and play from wot I heard. The M45 does not like high rpm so you can go with a much smaller pulley on the M62.

I wold also rather do this than go turbo on the R53.

You can use the R50 water pump, you will need the bracket as well and a different belt. The throttle body can be changed with one from an E36 328i and the pedal modified to take a cable. You will need bigger injectors (at least 440cc). The standard intercooler will be too small and a much bigger one will need to be fitted, normally in front of the radiator. TuneTech has done a few and would be the best route if you need someone to do the work.

If you PM me your email I will send a few pics of a car we did in 2009 (btw, I don't work for TuneTech). That car is now owned by Big Boss Auto, so they are another source for help.

I can tell you that with a Garret GT28 RS turbo the car made insane power. you will certainly need a LS Diff as well.

Thanks a lot for clearing that up about the water pump and throttle... I do have 440cc injectors laying around some where so that will come in handy.

My intercooler is perfect think it can hold up to 400hp.

LSD I'm searching for at the moment first want to get the conversion done.

As for the mech, I got one. He's busy with a 325is turbo which I will post some pictures and he has the knowledge since he's been building GTRs and BMWs for years

Thanks again for the response much appreciated

How much is you mech boosting into the plastic E30 intake pleanum?

Will be interesting, just a few ideas, don't go with gotech. why not ger a Link plug and play for the mini to tune what you need. that way the car will stil think it is proppely build. Other thing, you can use pretty much the standard mini ECU as it uses MAP sensor to sort out fueling?? just an idea. And if you go through all the trouble of fitting a turbo, and redoing all the plumming, why not just fit a electronic waterpump?

First choice for me would have been M62, you could have made huge power without any lag and less work.

Hi the intake is not plastic. It is at the moment @ 1 bar looking to go 1.5 bar.. It runs on ethanol..

The reason I want to go with the gotech is that my mech is a king with it, he knows the system in and out.

I have read up about the m62 and there was a lot of problems that occured.

The reason I want to go turbo is for long run, for now its 300hp and from there I can change internals and suspension to achieve a lot more power., eventually it will become a track car
