Finally us N55 guys can use MHD to flash our cars!

I have read up quite a bit about MHD, but I haven't experienced it myself. It seems awfully convenient - flashing your car for free from your android device using nothing but a few cables.

Seriously contemplating getting a K+DCAN cable and trying it out. What are your thoughts? How does this compare to JB4, performance wise?

It's awesome that MHD is now available for N55 with lots of development still to come. It is not exactly free. The flashing module has to be purchased for around $99 and each stage of maps costs around $49. Still great value for money. If you plan on using ethanol mix it's advisable to buy the logging module as well to keep an eye on timing and LPFP. Unfortunately we are limited to the 91oct maps for our pump fuel but luckily you can quickly flash your car ( 2 minutes ) if you want to run a higher octane map or ethanol mix map. I'll be trying it out some OTS maps soon on my N54. Can't wait. Lol Heard great reviews about MHD

I've done the stage 2 map on my 335 N55 which only has a dp. Major difference. And the Alpina B3 flash really compliments it well.

Having flashed this months ago, are you still happy? What is your long term review on it? I am considering doing this flash and using the generic maps supplied. I read somewhere that people moan about turbo lag but I can't find answers about what they are on about. I also can't find the "risks" involved during flash procedure.

I would first like to get a CP though, rather be safe than sorry, before doing a flash that will increase boost. R3.5k isn't cheap for the flasher module software and one map (particularly comparing to N54 version) but when you take into account prices of other devices or the cost of custom flashes from workshops, it is an absolute bargain.

Im running JB4 with BEF on my N54, never looked back. Yes its N54, but you n55 boys will be happy. Been running it for close to 5 months now and worth every cent, JB4 to keep the DME calm and MHD for everything else + you have the added safety of the two combined.

MHD is like nike.......Just do it :)

@spikey Have you had the car on a dyno yet?

I'm planning on flashing MHD Stage 2 after my major service coming up next month. Current mods are DP, CP and Intake. Quite curious to see how much more power she makes. Have you had any issues/codes as yet?

What is the peak boost on MHD stage 2?

I have an N55 with JB4, and I'm happy with the power, would just like it more smoother. I'm wondering of MHD will be of any value to my setup?

Why not go MHD Back End flash? The power delivery is definitely smoother than just JB4 alone, but MHD claims that their OTS maps are still better than Terry's BEF maps. I haven't tried both, but someone that has can maybe chime in.

From the MHD N55 user guide: "- Stage 2 Maps: Eight maps included: Stage 2 (high flow downpipes recommended),
Stage 2 + FMIC (DPs + upgraded FMIC recommended). Each with 4 octane variants (US
Octane 91, 91, 93, 95 / RON 93-95-98-102). Average Power Levels 350-380HP using a
peak 14 to 18PSI tapering to 11-12PSI."

Quoted from the user guide, depending on the fuel used (RON 93-95-98-102)
"Average Power Levels 370-420hp using a peak 16 to 18 psi tapering to 12-14psi at redline."

You beat me to it haha... why does your user guide differ to mine?

Hmmmm did you maybe look at the N54 MHD guide? I see that the N54 OTS maps were created by Wedge, and the N55 OTS maps were created by Twisted Tuning. For the N54 stage 2 you get 370-420hp using a peak 16 to 18 psi tapering to 12-14psi at redline.

Cool, thanks for clarifying!

I was hoping that Stage 2 would offer more than 270kW, since I'm currently at 230kW with DP CP and intake already. Or maybe that figure is estimated at the wheels?

They indicate on the site their stock map as 306hp which is basically the quoted power by BMW on the flywheel so I imagine the figures indicated are not on the wheels although that would be great.

Try the BMS N55 BEF with the Jb4. You wont be disapointed and its free.

With the BEF, are all maps on the JB4 available to use?

Does this mean you have to use the JB4 cant revert to map0?

Yes all maps are still available with on the fly switching. You still have all of the JB4 features available since the BEF just let's the DME handle all of the timing, trimms etc. so that it can focus on the boost control as well as logging, digital gauges and secondary safety systems.

Map 0 will still be stock power, even with BEF. Hope this answers your question.

Seems awesome - I may ending up doing this in the weekend.

Sorry for the silly question, but if I removed the JB4 in order to diagnose any problems (have had to do this before) will I need to flash the car back to stock first, or will the BEF allow it work as normal?

Hmmmm good question, I would flash it back to stock if you are going to remove the JB4. As far as I understand, the JB4 hijacks the DME boost target and attenuates the signal for which map you choose under the JB4 settings. Not sure if the BEF maybe has zeroed out boost targets to let the JB4 decide what boost to run, or anything similar. From the link below, Steve reckons it's better to flash to stock, I would take his word for it :)
