Mazda CX5

Hi,

I have a 2016 facelifted (previous generation) CX5 2.0 Active Auto.

I bought it with only 7,000km in the clock back in 2016 for a very reasonable R300k (including aftermarket nappa leather).

The car rides and handles brilliantly. I would rate it as a much better (read sportier and more involving drive) than its natural rivals (CRV, Kuga, Rav4, etc.) and at the same level as the current X1 and current Tiguan FWD models.

Interior fit and finish are better than my 3 series F30 and actually approaches Audi quality levels.

Being non turbo, you have to rev it a bit to get some urge, but I would rate it better across the whole rev range (in general) compared to a small capacity turbo, such as the Tiguan 1.4T, which struggles a bit at low revs and when instant torque is required (I have driven both the manual and auto Tiguan models and the issue is more pronounced in the manual model).

My 3 year standard warranty expires at the end of the year (the Plan was activated end 2015) and I have extended it with Mazda, but chose against extending the service plan, given the lower annual mileage my SO does on this car.

Are there any other CX5 owners out there and how has been your experience, especially out of Plan?

I love this car. Mazda really did a good job. I especially like the look of the new version as well. Its on my list as a potential car if I ever decide to sell my BMW

We have a cx3. What an awesome car.. I'm sure the cx5 us even more comfy..

2l na motor is proper .. 120kw and I have NEVER lost a race to any bakkie .... Hahaha..

It's crazy how many bakkie owners want to try and bully the little cx3.. but then they come short.. lol

The CX3 is a great little chuckable mini SUV. I test drove one with a manual gearbox and it was pretty quick to respond. Went for the CX5 just for the space.

I really really love these things. Mazda has done an outstanding job with it. Wouldnt mind the diesel one as a family wagon actually. Seem quite capable as well

Nice write-up

Was never a fan of Mazda until our Mazda 2's and I'm pretty certain my replacement will be another Mazda

Mazdas these days are packed to the rafters with kit. I also agree the interior is very very nice everything is where its suppose to be.

GF had the Mazda 3... something... Came with a 50GB harddrive and full navigation + sunroof + auto + leather seats and as we found out later.... side impact airbags (The ones in the seat) + Curtain airbags and airbags for your knees.

If only they had the 1.5 Diesel in the mazda 2 on the mazda 3 then it would be a serious contender against the Golfs and the Focuses.

My SO has exactly the same model CX5. Also out of service plan. We have not had a days regret with this vehicle. We took a trip to the Kruger national park a month ago. I am truly impressed with the reliability, fuel economy and comfort of this SUV. Yes you do have to rev it up, but it does not disappoint. Before purchasing the Mazda, we looked a the Tiguan, CRV and the Tucson. We did not bother with the Ford "Fireball". The Mazda just felt more solid and the interior quality was way much better than the rivals, in our opinion.

Beautiful car. Currently considering a CX-5 as replacement for my wife's Golf. Everything I have read about the car has been positive. And they are quite affordable; I saw a 2018 VW Tiguan 2.0 TDI manual for R459000 with 11000km (the 81kw) at VW, at Mazda there is a 2017 2.2 Diesel auto CX-5 with 12500km, this is the new 140kw spec for R410000. Bonkers.

The diesel is outside our price range so we'll go for the 2.0 auto. What is the fuel consumption like in town?

Fuel consumption average with SO doing alot of short trips is 8.4 litres per 100km. On the highway, I average around 7.5 per trip.

I can vouch for that fuel economy. On the open road you can drop to about 6.6 - 6.8
We have the 2.0 auto.

Mr_Y, apologies for the thread hijack.

My wife received her CX-5 on Monday and we are very happy with the car. We got a fantastic deal from Lazarus in Centurion. Initially looked at demos but a new one (Active Auto 2.0) was only about 6k more. The interior is something else, everything feels premium and definitely the best out of all the vehicles we looked at. I felt the Tiguan was overpriced. Also have to agree with you on the 2.0 engine, you have to rev it a bit but it gets to 140km/h easily and doesn't sound like its working hard at that rpm. We don't have navigation (its a R6000 extra), but I know Mazda has rolled out Apple Carplay in the EU so it should be here soon.

Some initial impressions:
I am tall (1.95) so space in the back is a bit cramped, but for most people should be fine.
No full size spare wheel, it's not a marie biscuit either, something inbetween
Infotainment system is very easy to use. While driving can only use the knob and buttons - standing still can be used as touch screen
Stop start system works better than in a Golf - if you are standing still you depress the brake more to switch off the engine, so it gives you more control
When unlocking all the doors unlock as opposed to only the drivers door, will have to check if it can be changed

Good choice there.
If you have kids, I would recommend getting aftermarket leather. Try Handel Street or Leather Line for a quote. It cost us about R7k back in 2016. Best modification ever.

On a side note, there is no carpet or rubber in the door pockets (at least not in my model),so small things slide around alot. A quick remedy would be to cut a small piece of non slip cupboard lining and plonk it in. Really helps with annoying keys rattling up and down.

This CX5 is also on my wishlist. just a bit undecided between the CX3 and CX5. But seems the CX3 are smaller.? less bootspace then cx5.?

Cx3 is much smaller (it is based off the Mazda2 platform). But the main drawbacks of the cx3 are the torsion beam rear suspension (the cx5 has multilink), you feel it on rougher roads, and the lower outputs of its 2.0 petrol motor (114kw/204Nm vs 121kw/210Nm in cx5).

I would choose a used cx5 over a new cx3...
