It's worth what ever someone is willing to pay. Unfortunately unless it has full documented history it's going to be an unknown and potentially a very expensive unknown.
As you know I am embarking on a similar exercise and considering the silly amount of money involved I would only do this knowing that the engine has been completely rebuilt properly.
I would replace the the timing chain and keep it where it is.

I have the paperwork for BMW supplying a brand new engine in 2002. Previous 2 car owners (one on the forum) could vouch for the low milage. It's currently in an E28 M5, which starts and drives like a dream.
Reason I'm asking what it's worth is because I have a persistent friend that wants to buy it.
I've Google and haven't come across one for sale, a few S38's sold for $5k but no M88's
Maybe I should just hang onto it until I find a rusty E9 to drop it into

what happened to your e28 m5?
anton-sa said:imho youre better off with a m60b40, it also has 210kw but has 400nm torque as apposed to 340nm.
but making it fit.... its def been done...
the m88... afaik its a very very expensive engine to work on.
you could for example boost a m30b28 or m30b35 to make much more power... and probably be alot cheaper in doing so...
guys have fitted e39 m5 motors into e28's (so e24's will be similiar)
294kw 500nm... probably similiar money to a m88...
if a motor is being swapped, then how original is the car anyway, perhaps one can just look the other way with the motor.![]()
a1exander said:Elton if the motor is 60K old and complete it is worth R50 K.
Bought one in pieces on a sweetheart deal for R15K (you know from who)however that one will need R40K to assemble and given its owner's propensity to only go for the best R80k will not be too far off the mark.

Thanks for the input Pete.
And I don't think 80k is far off the mark, labour, parts, tuning etc, could be even close to 100k

I'm looking for an M88 engine if anyone has one for sale? Running, not running, in pieces or whatever. I'll rebuild her anyway.
Thanks all,
