M6 V10 or 640D

Good morning everyone

Hope you are all well today.

There are two cars I've been looking at and wondering if anyone has had a look at them and can offer any info on them?

The links are below:

Being in EL makes it a bit difficult when cars are 1000km away. Has anyone been to view either of these?

The V10 is something I've wanted since it came out, but the 640d seems the more sensible choice. Heart vs head again.

It wouldn't be my daily. Just for weekends and the odd little trip away. FJ Cruiser is my daily, no need to watch out for potholes or anything with that.

V10 all day for what you going to use it for.

You are saving R180k on the purchase price versus buying the 640D, which you will need to do all the preventative maintenance on the V10, but then you have a car for the ages. V10 is the second best BMW engine ever. At the coast as well, lovely.

Been a while since I lived in the EC but knowing the road quality and how far you'll be from a reputable workshop it's hard to recommend either, but a V10 M6 will be a headache to maintain - I doubt the BMW dealer in EL is equipped with good techies to take care of the car properly and it's not a car where "spend X to have everything sorted" always works - you need to have a mech you can trust with a car like that (ideally close by).

Given that I'd say the newer car is a better bet.

Open to correction, but the gearbox in that old M6 V10 is prone to expensive issues.

The 640d should be more reliable. Having driven one, I can say:
- the rear seats are very cramped. It is actually tighter than a 2 series Coupe. Same will apply to all 6 series coupes.
- it is not that quick as a hot hatch turbo petrol in lower speed or urban driving. Its strength is in higher speed cruising and overtaking.
- it does not handle like a sports car in tight bends. It is definitely a GT grand touring car.

If you can live with the above, then the 640d is fantastic. Though a Gran Coupe may be better if you have kids

640d would be the winner here based on the other comments in terms of age and reliability etc.
Also, adding to MR_Y's comment, I recently got a Gran Coupe and it is very spacious if you intend on having 4 doors, deceptively large really.
So far, I am happy with mine and it excites me each time I get into it.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Some great points there, especially when it comes to being able to have proper maintenance done down here.

It's a lot to think about. I've asked for details on the cars. Still waiting though. So I'll see what they come back with.

The 640d I feel is the safer choice. New tech, speed isn't the issue and it's not really a slouch. But that V10...there won't ever be another one and I'm assuming that it will appreciate in value. I drove a 2009 M5 that may come up for sale. The sound from that exhaust is the best I've ever heard it has also had some preventative maintenance done...bearings, etc. Mileage around the 97k km mark but I've always like the 6ers.

Has anyone here had any dealings with either of these dealerships? Being down here I don't know much about what the dealers are like in other cities.

I'd tend to agree with this.

Considering you already have a daily, the V10 might be a good thrill at that pricepoint. Save a couple of bucks to keep the car running in top form (provided it is in an acceptable condition already).

But if there are practicality considerations that you will need to factor in, the 640d (albeit more expensive) will be the choice. As much as we get chestpains when we feel that we may have passed on our dream cars, the truth is they will most likely always come around again. And funny enough by that time, it might not be as important as we once thought it was.

That being said, I use a somewhat 40/60 rule. If the need for practicality goes over 40% then the decision will be based on practicality. I take into account the actual cost (including financing, insurance etc), running costs, mileage on the car, mileage i will be putting on the car roughly, state of the car, propensity to hold value, (future) family considerations while i'm still unmarried, existing financial commitments and most importantly the smile factor.

Don't know much about the other dealer but i have had good dealings with Citton for a while now. Run like a family business and has been around for ages.

640d with some basic mods (downpipe/exhaust and software) is also no slouch. Not a V10, but the 40d makes a nice growl with the right exhaust too.

I went from a 640i to a 40d (in an X6) and the flexibility and sportiness of the engine really surprised me. It would suit the 6 series very well.

I can vouch for Citton Cars. Know the owners (family owned) and I do a lot of business with them - they are very reputable (Google will also tell you that)

Is there a list of items to look out for?
I've been sent a Dekra report and some pictures and videos. Seems there were a few items that they had to sort out, but judging by some of you guys here that vouch for them, I take it that has all been done properly.
If there is anyone here that can help I can WhatsApp the report and pictures that I was sent.

The 640d has been sold.

640d

Heres my Reasoning(2c):
640 is newer (a generation newer)
Fuel consumption
V10 needs rod bearings serviced
Maintenence costs of the V10 will be higher
V10 starting to look dated
More things to go wrong on the V10
Wont use all that V10 perormance on normal roads or in normal driving conditions.

Head vs heart decision most defnitly
