I am so glad we skipped those horrible american rubbish bumpers on the e28

As I understand it, those are a result of it being a legal requirement to have indicator lights on the side of the car. Might be wrong though... maybe the Americans just liked it more that way :dunno:

and some interesting facts:
E12 535iM produced as CKD's in South Africa until December 1984 and in total 1416 units were produced. Have all the Vin numbers in case somebody is interested.....

Then came the E28 M5, and of that the my knowledge, only 96 produced (assembled from CKD kits) from June 1987 through November 1988.

It would be more to the fact that they had to have low-speed-impact bumpers with shock absorbers, so that you can have a collision at <10km/h with practically no damage... The side indicators were also a requirement, but they would not have to make a hideous bumper just for side indicators. It was worse on some Porsches...

grew up with the 80's 5 series, just had to have one as a "spare" car to my current E39 run-about
