Hi there,

Just a quick noob question. Can you do sw / map on the m5 for removing speed governor and raising limiter? Also i have heard that the smg gearbox can be mapped for smoother and faster changes?

Been researching the eff out of the e60 m5 m6 but its mostly usa topics that pop up..

Thanks in advance..

Yes, you can.
However you should NEVER raise the RPM limiter on any naturally aspirated M.
You risk running bearings, especially on an older engine that has the original bearings.

There are aftermarket SMG tunes as well, yes.

I was gonna say raising the limiter sounds dodgy as all hell. The limiter is there for a reason surely.

well how often do you do over 250kph??? :skit:

I wouldn't trust the quality of our roads to do that speed easily.

But I suppose the bragging rights of having a car that is capable of doing more than 250kph because the governor was removed are more important...?

Ok so it can happen..
I read on some US forums where once they are mapped the limiyer os raised to 8500rpm from 8250rpm not much.. i beleive on the test bench the v10s were pushed to 12000rpm by bmw.. could be one of those bar discussions through..

So in short is it worth mapping assuming both engine and gearbox map wont cost more than 6 to R7k?

Flat panel k and n filters and possibly a decat exhaust for better air flow and sound and not for noise..

Also what are RPI scoops? Is it like a cold air induction for the airfilter?

All this should cost around R15 to R20k so performance should increase by what 20hp? 30hp? 40hp?

Your guys experience is highly appreciated with regards to v10 owners or previous owners.. also can you still buy an aftermarket warranty for these cars.. is ot worth the capital layout or is it better to keep a small fund going on a monthly basis?

Thanks.

Oh and yes probably more for bragging rights to have the top speed limiter removed as im not one to speed on roads.. but its nice to know that you can, given a closed road or airstrip etc..

Well, if you do indeed have this M5 and plan on modding etc please post up an intro thread with pics of the car and any work in progress so we can enjoy following :)

Hi

Yes you can buy a after market warranty. I have SA warranty policy with top up for R16000.00. To date has paid R60000.00 out and still have over a year left on it.

Yes the cold air induction will make a difference not much but it does. If going to play with exhaust, then just as well buy a full exhaust and have software done, there will be a real improvement rather than just a decat.

Here i was was thinking 373kws from a 5.0 V10 is enough....

Guess there's no such thing as enough power

You want to what? Raise the rev limiter? On an M5? With a V10 motor that already revs to 8500 rpm? Which is already highly strung?
:sorry:
I suggest you go buy a massive magnet first, you'll need it to pick up the pieces.

BMW also have a software upgrade for the original SMG, makes a nice difference. Easier on your diff and clutch too.

Sadly that 373kw isn't available in when you are higher up. Good luck with the build

Cool thanks guys..

@f21gp thanks for advice.. ill look into sa warranty if i buy the car..

Probably wont do any mods for now.. only in the future once i get used to the new power.. but its nice to know what m5 m6 owners have done without issues etc..

Hi,

The RPM limiter does typically get raised to 8500, which the engine is more than capable of. The speed governor also gets removed.

RPI scoops are def an item worth investing in, they do not show on dynos obviously because they work on speed.

Regarding exhaust, the V10 M5/M6 had the most poorly designed branches in existence, replacing them adds an easy 40-50hp more. Removing the catalytic converters also adds a nice 50hp with software.

I think 'if' means he doesn't own the car as of yet.

Ay face-palm, thanks. If you want to own a car like this please make sure it's your spare car and that you have a fund available to do repairs. Yes the warranty is useful but critical to have a large fund laying around.

One she will be fine the next she may need some work.

Bearings is a must, if buying one where it's been done already get all invoices and paperwork.

Did you know the paddle shifters on the steering wheel are 4.5k a pop!!!

Have Equal length equal diameter branches made by a professional shop like STS performance and have them match up an exhaust to it. Budget for around R30k.

Have software done to have the top speed limiter upped.

Always run extra octane in the fuel as it's a 12.0 to 1 compression motor. The bearings will thank you later.
