M5 airflow meters

So i was cleaning my engine bay this morning, only to discover that both my Airflow meters were unplugged.

My mechanic told me the car would miss-fire a bit when cold claiming that one of them was faulty, but i didnt realise the freaken MOFO had unplugged them entirely!!!:argh:

When i plugged them back in, the car had no power, so i unplugged them again.

QUESTION: Can i "clean out" and revamp these okies, or do i have to buy new ones?

I think you need a new mechanic buddy , I don't think such things should just be unplugged on an M5 especially

Plug them in , the ecu should adapt back after a drive of say 50 km or so .The ecu adapts to a stuffed AFM ( MAF ) and when a new one is fitted it adaps to the new values the ecu receives .

The two airflow meters plus the four oxygen sensors play a very important role to calculate the amount of fuel injected every cycle. If the MAFS are unplugged the program see the reading is out of limits and revert to a pre programmed constant, this constant is then used for fuel calculations at ALL revs and engine temperature conditions, which you can imagine is not ideal.

If the MAFS are removed and a new MAF table written it would be much better than using one constant for all conditions, so my advise is to replace both MAFS, yes they are expensive, but so are a new engine..!

Cheers

i think my ex mechanic needs a fckiun PK! , and the d$$s didnt answer his phone, but i think he can deduce from the voice message i left him, that he's got a fookin flattie coming to his ear, the next time i see him, nevermind the fact that the left am wires were hanging dangerously close to the belt. What an idiot!!!

I cant help thinking that this fckuer has taken my working ones off the car, because they were both plugged in when i took it to him, and car ran smoothly. i just cant seem to find anybody i can entrust my car servicing to, and if i had to teach myself to do these things myself, i'm gonna need expensive equipment for the electronics etc, which will simply work out cheaper to take my car to the agents.

so is Diesel Electric the only option?

S62's make exceptionally good paperweights...

As a matter of fact, they can hold down trees...

I would not drive the car, as Mamba pointed out.

Its also a common failure on the E39.

What you can do, is come visit me, reset errors, reset adaption, and take her for a drive, like we did last time... And then scan errors/check readings again to determine if one or both are out fo spec...

Stephen, I can take you to Jacques, he is really trustworthy, especially if I were to show up there with you.

Only thing is, he is only open again on tuesday, because monday is a holiday. If you like, we can call him then and maybe book your car in, that's if LZ cant help you.

stig i had the same problem with my e36 except it was never my airflow, it was my idle screw that was too high, just check it, because i had no power to pull off i had to pick the revs up first

I believe it is much cheaper if you import the MAFs yourself. I think one guy on the forum imported a set for around R3000 a couple of years ago. It would have worked out to about R12k from the stealers...
