Agents bro, its a common issue on the M42. Any 2nd hand ones you find will be suffering the same wear issue, buy new and never worry about it again.

Okay, Thanks Gizmo

was hoping to get a used set tho... budgets a bit tight at the moment.

just some further advice if you don't mind:
Since the infamous rattle I have opted to not drive the car but as I do not want to cause any more harm but it has been difficult. LOL
Question:
Can I used a thicker oil - 25w60 to quieting it down a bit?
Do I risk the timing chain snapping by driving the car?

:ty:

Its a double timing chain for starters so its super strong, unfortunately it wears with mileage and so do the sprockets and chain guides and tensioner. First thing I would replace is the hydraulic tensioner on the exhaust side of the motor, if it doesn't quieten the motor's chain section then do all guides. If that doesn't work then the chain and sprockets.
Have you pinpointed the sound from the chain section or are you hearing noisy lifters?
Keep using 10w40

Well I actually haven't had a closer look at the motor to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from but it seems like the upper front part of the motor... Will do as you recommend, first hydraulic tensioner and then take it from there

With regards to oil - ive been using 20w-50:bouaaaaah: Should I change?

Cheers

So last time I posted I had this terrible rattling and I assumed that is it was the timing chain and the guide rails that might be replaced... so all I did since then was drain the oil and topped up with 20w50 and started it up... there was still some slight rattling but not as bad as before. I didn't drive the car for a bout a week out fear that I might worsen the problem...

on Friday I was desperate and needed to use the car and hesitantly did so. And guess what - No rattle what so ever!! Nothing, zip, nada! motor running smooth as if nothing happened and nothing replaced... should I worry or let sleeping dogs lay?:tiptoe:
