I too feel nothing for the oafs that caused this. If anything, I feel for their families who now mourn them, and even more so for the families of any third party fatalities not directly involved in this recklessness.
Scenes like this (and ultimately events leading up to this) are the reason why controlled motorsport/racing is dying out in SA, and why we have so many road fatalities, and why authorities choose only to focus on speeding as an offence, forgetting or ignoring the many other enforceable laws and those who break them that contribute to bad driving experiences, such as unroadworthy vehicles, overloaded vehicles, etc.
Chef I'm not sure I follow the logic in the sentence I have highlighted above (bold)?? With respect, i think motorsport in SA in the mainstream is dying primarily due to exorbitant cost of competing. The less mainstream classes (VW Challenge I think its called as an example) are enjoying big entries because its (relatively) affordable to go and race for fun.
As for the rest of your comment I agree for the most part; the speed that this idiot was doing in isolation was not the reason for the accident. The INAPPROPRIATE speed, possible (probable) intoxication and therefore diminished reactions, the lack of driver ability in the first place, and the apparent lack of proper control of the vehicle (filming while driving) created the "perfect storm" for the loss of control of the vehicle. At THAT POINT, the fact that there was clearly high speed involved resulted in a catastrophic crash and severe impact(s) causing the vehicle to disintegrate.
I haven't seen the video and therefore not sure of the next comment however I would not be surprised at all if the driver was weaving through slower moving traffic while racing the Gti. At some point, he ran out of "talent" and this is the tragic result.
Chances are, sober driver on the same stretch of road with no other cars would have had a different end....he'd be bragging about whipping the Gti.... so the speed didn't kill.....the inappropriate speed resulted in a huge crash the ripped the car apart and killed the occupants. :fencelook:
I remain of the view that until such time as the traffic police actually do what it says on the side of their vehicles (Highway Patrol) and travel at all times faster than the traffic flow so as to drive "onto" (catch up to) the traffic flow at all times (rather than slow lane / emergency lane cruise at 80kmh) then idiots will continue to cause accidents which result in fatalities.
Example: N3 northbound to Joburg last week. Between Warden and Villiers at 130km/h overtook a truck and got overtaken by dipshit in a X5 who simply couldn't wait until I'd passed the truck and returned to left lane.... and he was only doing about 145kmh.... in order to pass me he went into the fast lane of the Southbound side of the N3. :dunnoanymore: the ultimate irony?? 15km later he's at the tollgate behind 3 trucks while I went sailing through the Tag lane (hired car) and thus back ahead of him.....WTF did he actually achieve :dunnoanymore:
Anyway this is just my opinion :fencelook:
