Hi Guys

I am possible in the market for an E46 M. what are the tell tale signs of abuse and what should i be looking for?

are the smg ones good?> or should i just look at the manual?

and maintenance wise is it heavy. i currently have a ci and it hasn't given me any hassles so far and maintenance is pretty cheap

any help or a link would be apprciated.

also. what colour is the most rare

I know how you feel. Cant help though never owned 1, but if i did i would say:

Low mileage is important
Buy manual not smg
check the back tyres lol:pimp:
Full service history with agents essential
Check the clutch make sure its 100% ok
Buy original, no mods or aftermarket
Settle for nothing less than immaculate!

i can only repeat what other people have said:

SMG box will break often
and parts on the M3 are like 3x normal parts price

tahnks for the input guys.

i will definately try and source a manual version then. are there any parts that are problematic? heard the discs are an arm and a leg but you could always upgrade the brakes for half the price.

heard discs alone are 10k a pair

So just make sure discs are good. Best advice don't be in a rush wait till you find 1 that you feel is in great condition because people these days have the own definition of great condition

look for 2005+

still on motorplan
csl exhaust manifold
proper bearings and pump
bixenon is a must
I hate my sunroof :)
nav would be nice

then pic a colour :)

discs can be had for R2K each from powerbrake. they are not floating like oem discs, but they are slotted instead of drilled. definitely going that route with better pads, fluid and SS lines when I need to do brakes

Do you know how much the dealers ones are? I was expecting them to also be an arm and leg for my e36, but they floating fronts came in at R1500 each without discount. I know e46 will be more, but how much more. And is the weight different a big between floating and non floating in the e46?

I am not 100% sure on OEM pricing, last time I had mine done was under motorplan. from realoem, they are $250 each. problem with oem is that with any moderate amount of tracking, they start cracking

weight :dunno:

I looked for a clean e46 ///m3 for a long time and finally found one with low mileage last year. Issues I found on other cars:
  1. Plenty ///M's have had the ring pulled out of them. High mileage, poor maintenance (post motorplan) and a general lack of care for the car. I stayed away from anything that looked like it hadn't been loved
  2. 2 cars I saw had cracked rear sub frames
  3. A few had had rather big smacks. Some had been repaired well other not so much
  4. some aftermarket accessories are very nasty and should be stayed away from
I always do a Motorplan check to see the history of a vehicle i might buy. Gives you a great idea of the previous issues and whether you are buying a "friday" car.

On getting my car (on motorplan) the following things happened:
  1. Needed disks and pads (disks warped <== common issue)
  2. Dealer "test drive" blew the clutch
  3. Dealer "replaced" clutch
  4. Clutch replacement botched
  5. Dealer replaced clutch, flywheel and smg actuators
  6. cracked strut brace
  7. Battery replaced
so.... if you remove the dealer initiated stuff the list is very small.
Brake disks are a problem, clutches don't like being abused and they really like attention and care. Treat an ///M right and they will reward you with years of fun.

Hi, this was my post a while back on a similar topic hope it helps...

"Remember no matter how reliable a car can be it's a M3 you want to buy. It was certainly not ben driven by Miss Daisy, its likely been hammered but these car's where built to be hammered Clap.

First thing you should look for first is getting one with the lowest mileage "be careful it could have been changed' and with a motorplan. Go to a dealer along with the cars VIN no. they give you the entire history on the vehicle. If its been in a smash, major components have been changed like the gearbox, diff, engine, computer box ect... Also stay away from one that been modified, it's likely to have been dragged at least once in it's life.

With regards to the gearbox, i know that the both 6 speed and SMG are great. However the SMG takes some getting used to. Like with the manual the clutch on the SMG has to go sometime but also it does act up now and again and a simple software reset cures the problem. The relays on SMG do pack up often and once they do the car cannot move as the gear lever gets stuck. Price on the boxes differ by like R20000 brand new, but i don't know whats the prices to get them repaired.

However the engine is bullet proof, i can only recall that the vanos does often leak oil and BMW will not repair them. I remember a few years back it cost R30000 to have it replaced but lucky for me my car was still under motorplan. I know guys do sell overhauled ones but i don't know the price of them. Diffs are also prone to breaking, again depends how them car was previously driven. The control arm bushes also need changing especially for the SMG M3's and the interior trim panels on the A pillar don't last they cost R3500 to replace. Breaks also tend to get worn out pretty quickly, again it depends how you drive the car, but they tend to make a lot of noise and cause heavy break shudder under high speed when they get close to needing a change.

As for the tyres, like with any rear wheel drive car thay are hard on the rears. But decent driving should get you at least 20000 odd kms.

Please don't think i'm bad mouthing the car I did own one myself a while back. As these things are unlikely to happen on the first day all i'm saying these are the common faults on them, you wanted to know the maintenance on them :). I don't really have to comment to the positives of the car its an M3 after all and that name should tell you what to expect. But i regret it selling mine and wish i kept it, bugs me every time i see one :bawling:"

I can only re-iterate that this is a time consuming process. Mileage is king and vehicle history is its friendly queen:). know exactly what has been done to the car before you jump and you will likely make a good choice.
