I recon some valves went poof when the chain let go, but perhaps the heads are still usable.. (I am fairly sure the chain let go if you got rods visiting the aircon...)

What oil have you been running..

I assume the stuff that BMW uses. was in for a major in NOV in George bmw. dipstick is full. I normallt use a 10w60 Castrol fully synthetic.

perhaps have the oil tested, maybe the wrong grade was used.

I tend to support the view that a rod bolt let go, but why would it of done so if the bearing recall was done at BMW, motorplan always throws a ton of new spared onto the guys, and at that low km, its hardly run in.

I will investigate when stripped. I have pulled the recall and the motor plan info. USA recall includes an oil pump. - LOw pressure. Just need the jobcard from the repair dealer now too. I emailed pics of the Hawk. Will mail pics tomorrrow evening.

Thats zero useable parts virtually.

mail them to me, I'll upload them for you
Just hoping the head has survived. Otherwise, IN the back yard for a while.
BMW quote 151k for a new motor. NOT going to happen.

saw one for R40K or so in JHB

Have you done the big end bearings yet Animosity ?

No - looks like a kak job :(
You have to remove the front subframe.

The parts aren't too badly priced though.
But you'll need to disconnect lower control arms, support the engine with an engine hoist, remove the subframe and then drop the oil pan.

If you have the tools to do it yourself, maybe we could help each-other out.
I don't have an engine hoist anymore, but I've got all the spanners, torque wrench etc, I just need to make-sure I have the correct size Torx sockets.

I have pretty much everything.

I have researched the job, and it does not look bad at all, or more correctly, it does not look complex, but it is a hell of a lot of work, cause as you say, subframe off....

Going to do mine soon, first up though, they are delivering my new clutch shortly.... :)

Where do you live?
If / When you do yours, please give me a shout - I'll lend a hand or two :)

The actual bearing job is easy.
As long as you've torqued and greased everything correctly, it's all fine.

But damn dude.. that subframe..
