I have a conspiracy theory about the front end of the current 1series. I think BMW deliberately styled the 1series odd, because they didn't want too much of the 3series market going to the new bigger and more upmarket 1series. The new one was out before the F30, I think if the car had the 2series front end on the car, a lot of the E90 3series owners would have seriously considered the 1series, as it had grown up in size and had a better interior than the E9x models, a lot may have purchased it, before the new 3 was launched, thereby eating into F30 sales. The global trend in the motor industry, has been downsizing to more small and eco-friendly vehicles.
Obviously the front end of the 1series will be fixed after the F30 has been launched. Its looks like it was a deliberate attempt to create a love it or hate it design, so that it doesn't become too successful...... They will sell a lot more 1series when the front end is fixed.
