M135i Steering Rack

Hi all...

I booked my car in for a routine service on Monday the 12th October. I mentioned that occasionally I would hear a "clank" sound coming from somewhere in front of the car when reversing and braking or if I tug on the steering wheel when the engine is off (when cleaning the interior, come on guys, jeez)... I sat with the service technician but for the life of me I could not reproduce the issue. I then told him if he doesn't find anything then it's fine - just do the service.

Later that day, I got a call saying that they did find an issue and they have been told by BMW motorplan or whatever that it is the steering rack. They've fitted the new rack today - and are busy "coding" it (??)

Anyway, I'm super nervous as it is apparently a big job. I really hope they didn't screw anything up...

Anyone here have the same steering rack issue? I see a ton of M135i owners mentioning this issue on other forums internationally...

Mileage = 24500KMS
Year = 2013

The wife had the same on her 2014 F21 M135i around 25k km's.
Same symptoms.

It's been fine since they replaced it!

Anyone else with the issue?

Mine made a clunk noise when turning the steering wheel either left or right...
First they replaced the steering spindle to no avail, so now had to order the entire rack...

Mine clunked on the driver's side and when going over speedbumps driver's side first. Thought it was the rack issue, but ended up being a tie-rod end.

Ill report back next week on mine once it has been replaced...
Taking it in tomorrow

Picked the car this afternoon.
Seemed ok at first... But the clicking noise came back when turning left and right...

Going back tomorrow again.
So frustrated!

Is that clicking noise when you turn left or right perfectly in-sync to a weird green left or right facing arrow flashing on your dash?

Yes, then it's completely normal, I have that too.

Ha ha we drive BMW's, didnt you know we dont use indicators?
So no clicking noise from that sir, no...
Ill explain that to the dealership

Same issue. When car is stationary and switched off move steering left to right and you can hear clunk noise.

Will report it to BMW next week when car is due for service.
