and on the way home it overheated again so bmw is on the way to collect my car

so was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.. and if anyone may know what the problem is?

mmmm can I be the first to ask what mods have been done on the car. ?

I hope its minor like a thermostat not opening.

what I mean is any mods can add fuel to the fire by adding the extra stress to the motor, that could be the underlying problem.

as precaution get them to swap out the thermostat - they will pick up if the water pump is faulty when doing so.

if its only intermittent its a warning to get it sorted now.

this sounds like the waterpump to me. Had same issue on my 330i, on my way home to pretoria one day coming back from a friend in krugersdorp my car suddenly made a noise, looked at my navigation screen and there was this slow down car overheating thing. Pulled of the road, trying to slow down my heart for second so I could think clearly and tried starting it up again, car started right up no problem. 4 months later same thing happened, same road also. And then more frequent to every week and eventually the car's fan will go ballistic on startup like I was a boeing getting ready for lift off .....

Talking about it, did you hear the electric fan go boeing fast when this happened? This is a tell tale sign that the waterpump is on its way out

yup i can understand that maybe the mods cause cause the problem, but doesnt help if they cant find anything wrong with the car

thanks okay will ask them to check the thermostat, and check the water pump

Which warning comes up? Surely that should help them?

My 335i was running hot in traffic, basically the radiator fan was on constantly.. Car had a software update and Ll was good. The late F20 'overheated' as it had a sensor issue..

Good luck getting it sorted.

This. Some cars require a new radiator fan/control unit as well.

The waterpump/thermostat issue is common on the E-series cars and the above on F-series N55's.

Mine use to go into limp mode where power would be cut off but turns out it was a faulty thermostat, JSN sorted it out for me

Maybe not the same problem, but I recently had issues on my moms N20

It would overheat, intermittently.

Took it to BMW they diagnosed waterpump and thermostat, car was then fine for a few months.

Then it started again, they diagnosed water pump once more, and it was swapped out under warrantee.

They then said it is still doing it, and gave me a quote to replace the fan and a bunch of stuff, nearly 40k

told them to go get lost, and I eventually found the issue as a broken wire to the water pump, it was intermittently losing power.

Replaced the wire, car has not said boo since..
