Lowered = Not roadworthy?

@Coisman it just does not make sense, so if you have to put a Lamborghini, or Ferrari through the test, you a basically screwed

about 2.5 years ago i got through a change of engine check and a RWC at langlaagte with my 200sx.

it was riding on home-cut springs (yes i did it with my angle grider LOL), and the lowest point of the car was just less than 100mm from the tarmac. to be fair, i was making it a drift/track car, but it still had to be street legal.

anyway - i had no issues getting the paperwork done with no bribery. in fact it was a smooth and not all that unpleasant experience.

my, my, how things have changed! coruption in this country really pisses me off.

330d comes from the factory wit 107mm ground clearance, so that is not very low...

Ok guys, here is what the SANS 10047 (South African National Standard) states about the shocks. In other words, the reasons why it might have failed:

SANS 10047:2009
Edition 6
5.44 Suspension units
5.44.1 Springs

Reject if
a) any spring is broken or sagging, or has been "packed" (to counter sagging) with materials or all
steering components (ball joints), or components other than those specified by the
manufacturer, or

b) any spring leaf or U-bolt is missing or is loose, broken or cracked, or

c) a spring centre bolt or clip is missing or is broken, or

d) the springs do not maintain the unladen vehicle in a reasonably level position, or

e) there is any crack in the spring cradle, or

f) any part shows signs of having been repaired by heating or welding.

:pimp:
So for any of those reasons they can, and most likely will fail your car. After all, they have to make their money somehow.

LOL - they said nothing about angle-grinding! hehe! maybe i got through cos its not stipulated.

@p1000 - it was very low. never took accurate measurements, but you couldnt get a standard 2ton trolley jack under the chassis rails. i used to ask a buddy to "lift" the car while rolled the jack in under the car.

also, i dont mean to be a doos, but i looked up specs of the 330d. they say 143mm ground clearance?

So is there no actually reference to wheels tucked in arches / suspension travel or distance from ground?

Ok, so here's how it played out...

I took the car in to another station, closer to my house, and it went through fine. They didn't even mention the dropped front, they did say the brakes weren't even so I shot down to Hi-Q and had the brakes looked at. After a bit of faffing, I drove off. When I got back to the testing station there was a different guy there. The first thing he asked was is the car lowered, to which i replyed, nope, just bigger rims. He took another look or two and decided his lunch was more important so he wipped it onto the rollers, tested the brakes and passed me.

All in all, I think I would have been failed if he knew but lucky for me the front wheel arch is huge on the e36's. No bribing, just a little lying ;)
