Dude, join the club!!! It's a very common problem with dozens of potential causes and fixxes.

What year is your car and what engine does it have?

Do you know off hand if you have an OBD or ODBII port on your car? Otherwise just give me the year model.

I'll be happy to run a quick diagnose on your car.

Hi Gents, my 1st time on here. Hope you can help me. My car 318i E46 N42 A/T is doing the exact same thing. Carlos W power charge me R5500 to fix my problem but the erratic idling and poor acceleration still exist. I've fitted new coils, spark plugs, done a engine flush new oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, new throttle body and crank vent valve but lo luck at all. The dealer could not find any problem (no codes) and told me that the N42 engine is known for the idle trouble. But only if it was the idling, its hesitating when pull away and sometimes stall.

So can anyone give me some advice. Because this is driving me crazy...:argh:

Thanks in advance.

Have you had your MAF checked out? A step after having the MAF replaced/ cleaned I'd check Vanos.

Welcome to the forums btw! Post up some pics in the Showroom, it's a pre-requisite around these parts ;)

Thanks Jeff, will add some pic's.

When I unplug the MAF the car goes crazy and the A/T box goes into a safe mode. So would that rules out the MAF ?

How can I check the vanos. Sometimes when I start the car its making a funny noise. Almost like a faulty starter, but the starter is brand new.

Thanks.

Wow thats the same problem i have.I serviced my car and replaced everything and new oil then the problem was one. But the past weekend it started and got worse So i took off my throttle and cleaned it and then took off MAF and cleaned it as well. the car is driving much better but i will be going to Jeff soon for diagnostics.

After spending months and months and R15k later on this car, I've decided to sell it. Not even the stealers can found anything wrong with it. Never ever will I buy myself a 4 cyl BMW again. Its a nice car, drives well and so on. But the engine management system is up to no good. It was giving me trouble since day one. For 8 months now with only 144k km on now.

I'm now looking for a 320d again. I like the 120d, just a bit hard to find in Auto.

Its sad to let the 318i go. Its still in a perfect condition, its just the idling and the pull away thing. Dammit!! :argh:

My 316i did something similar and then it just died. It turned out to be the catalytic converter that had to be replaced. That was expensive news.
