Looking to switch over to BMW. My first financed car.

I'm not too worried about 320d versus 530d regarding power, upgrading from a 2004 Citi Golf 1.6 so the power of the 320d will already be a huge upgrade.

How does a 2006 530d compare to a 2010 320d, feature wise?

Between those 2 options I would say go for the 320d.

I had the choice and went for the 3. The 530d had more km and I wanted at least a little MP so that BMW could fix anything I find wrong. 530d would not have been a bad choice though! They're so fantastic to drive. You can get an '07 530d for your price range. I would go for an '07+.

Feature-wise you'll have to look at the specific car.

1-2 months to go, I'm itching to buy.

Finance arrangements will be ready end of Jan or end of Feb, hoping for January.

I've searched the forums but I still have 1 question, I'd prefer buying from a dealer as finance should be easier then?

My experience with car dealerships has been shaky, don't trust a car salesman very easily.

Could someone please advise on a good second hand dealership that sells BMW's?

I've been looking around, most dealerships have 2010 BMW 320d's for R160-170k, which is okay except then they want to charge you R4000 for "License plates & registration" when it actually only costs a few hundred Rand.

Anyone?

This time of year forums are less frequented, and it is weekend.

Best to buy from a well known franchised dealer.(Even they are dodgy) Always have the VIN number checked, FSH compulsory.
Hard to find any dealership not charging the "On road" charges, depending on your negotiating skills,

Check helopeter for comments once you have a dealer in mind?

Ters.

Nice thread to eliminate dodgy dealers..... http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=249

Yeah, best to stick to the franchised dealers. R4000 is steep for Lic & reg. The dealers charge an "On the road fee" which should cover the transfer of Motorplan and the vehicle check that occurs when doing the transfer of Motorplan, tank of fuel, valet, COR etc. I would pay no more than R1000 for plates and lic & reg. What I found and don't fall into the trap of seeing the advertised price and then not reading the fine print, a lot of the non franchised dealers charge a lot extra over the price of the vehicle. See below advert as example:-

Car is advertised at R239 950 but the additional charges in the fine print amount to another R9K. Always try to negotiate an all inclusive deal where the price you pay includes everything, if they cant include their additional charges in the selling price, tell them you'll buy from somewhere else. From what I remember the car in the advert has been there since July 2013 and not moved.

BMW Financial services is very good, I didn't even bother with the banks.

I bought a 335 in July 13, got approved no problem with a balloon payment and prime less 1%. Now you think I'm crazy for buying with a balloon? Well my car was only supposed to come in Sep, but dealer found me 1 within 24hours and the buyer of my Double Cab wasn't ready, he paid me off over 3 months, so once I got the 1st installment I settled the balloon plus some capital, kept my installment the same so my period was shortened by a year. Best part is you keep the negotiated interest rate.
Bearing in mind I'm a self employed accountant and treated as a 2nd class citizen because of the New Credit Act, BMW FS was very good and gave me no crap, even when I settled the capital, finance was approved in about 30mins.

So a tip, if you have a deposit don't put down Upfront, as you negotiate a better rate, then after a month or 2 pump in the deposit, you will keep the interest rate, then you can decide to keep the installment unchanged reducing the period or keep the period unchanged but reducing the installment.

Another benefit is that if you have a vehicle financed through BMW FS, you can also apply for a Homeloan through them.

Good Luck, now you must find your perfect car

Awesome reply, thank you!

But will BMW FS only finance second hand cars sold by BMW dealers?

I got my 320d very cheap and threw money at it making it almost immaculate.
I am very happy for the car and the entire engine revamp cost me around 20k including swirl flap removal and a few other mods on my E46
Nedless to say i am very happy with the car after market parts are available.
If I could i would have bought a 330 d but could not pass the chance of R35 k for my 320d :)
the most expensive part i had to replace was a Air flow meter.
so maintenance on the car is not that big :)
Good luck !

Its getting closer to March, this month's pay wil be great, next month's pay will be great, just waiting to see about March. I want to rather look at the 520d's. Zambezi Auto has a 2009 520d with 115 000km on the clock for R170k?

I just went onto Carfind, and Filtered as follows:

BMW>
3 Series>
Diesel>
Mileage 60 000-100 000 km>

There are plenty of 320d's between 170k and 190k with less than 90 000 km, still in motor plan.

If you opt for 520d, I seriously doubt you will find one in this price range still in motor plan.

The motor-plan is pretty significant. It is one of the best ways to ensure you get a car that is still in good nick, and it gives you the opportunity to sort out niggles cost free.

Filtering for 520d, you find that for a car in MP pricing starts at 220k.

So imho, if your price range is 150k-190k consider 320d. If you can get together 230k, you can start looking for a 520d.
