Looking for replacement car

Due to increase in family size and mainly due to the fact that my second car is lacking in security features like airbags, abs, ebd etc I am looking to change my second vehicle.

My requirements are quite simple:
Must be able to fit a pram with some shopping
Must be a manual
Must be ready to be used as a daily
Must have space(i am used to alot of space having big cars for years)
Consumption needs to be acceptable as it will be a daily as will some fair amounts of traffic
Budget constraints are under R100k
While i like space, my wife has convinced me not get another big vehicle that is light on fuel as it negates the point of having a E60 530d since the second can do it just as well....:blueCry:

I have been considering the following:
X3 2.0d
X3 3.0d
VW Touran 1.9tdi
E46 320d Touring

What should i be looking at when considering a X3 2.0d with approx 180k-200k, cos thats the vehicles in my price range? Unfortunately my price range means older higher mileage vehicles.

For an X3 I would look at clutch and if auto the transfer case. Would also look at service intervals and FSH, as it will give you an idea of what's been done over the years.

The 3.0d is quite a monster with SW, not that it's a requirement...

I have started to find a liking in these car, why I don't know cause I am against any SUV thing.

E46 325i touring gets my vote. BTW we never got them in diesel models, only 318i and 325i.

Chrysler voyager is the biggest POS there is out there! Seriously thirsty on fuel and parts availability is almost non existent.

i dont think you will get value for space, power, etc... better than these, and they have proven themselves over and over...

If you not going to do any offroad driving then the X3 is overkill, being a 1800kg vehicle you can certainly feel it in the drive. If you want a predominantly town car then the E46 touring is a better bet and way more nimble and light on its feet, parking it is easier too. If you like, come drive my wife's X3 and then my touring and you can see for yourself what I mean.
As far as loading space, the X3 has a taller roof but floor area is roughly the same. I have fitted 10x 225/45/17 semi's into the back of my touring before so it's definitely not short on space!

Parts availability is much greater on the touring too as it shares the E46 parts bin.

I have never liked the looks of the X3, but that is just me. I agree that AWD on a kids taxi is overkill.

Get a good E46 wagon and smile! For a big win, make sure that there are six spark plugs in use under the bonnet.

This one looks good for R75K. The bad news is that is an auto, but the good news is only 148,000km, spiffy wheels and a sunroof.

It seems that R10K has been knocked off the price already. Make a deal.

That's a lot insight gizmo. I was also looking at e46 touring but I worry about consumption as a daily.

I have chatted spawn616 about his e39 too but the auto is holding me back.

I won't consider big american though, they are always heavy in fuel and parts aren't cheap.

Herr, I did look at the jetta, but for some reason I came across a lot of high milers that needed some work. If find a decent one I will consider it.

I did also see a decent touran TDI that i am probably go to see tomorrow.

Tell you what, I far prefer my wife's Jetta TFSi to my old F30. Smoother, quieter, loads more power and more space. Just a nicer car to be in than an F30. Wife refused to drive the Beemer, she didn't like it at all.

Don't knock it till you tried it.

We had one in the UK, awesome cars, much nicer than my Range Rover Sport. Loads of space and really good on fuel. A much better choice than a X3. In fact, we've just bought another one to replace the F30.

As far as consumption goes, I have a very short diff ratio of 3.62:1 and I drive that touring! Never seen the consumption go over 9.9lt/100km. The M54B25 is really underrated, ultra reliable, cheap to service and good on fuel. You should seriously go check out some 325i tourings, you won't be sorry you did.

A 325i is really not that heavy on juice. It will give you 9 to 11 l/100km. Not quite as miserly as a diesel but maintenance should work out cheaper.
