Looking for a small SUV

I'm in the market for a SUV, looking at the likes of RAV4, CRV, X3, Q5, Jeep Cherokee and Disco Sport.

Problem I am finding is that the cheaper end of this spectrum don't have adequate power I am looking for and bar the Jeep, the others all command a premium. Generally looking for 140kw plus as I use the vehicle for multiple uses and I also am a power mad driver hahaha.

Out of that list above, I find that the Jeep is priced at a point that is favourable. Anybody driven or own these vehicles and willing to give some info?

I'm in the same boat, depends on budget you can get some good cars. I would steer clear of the Discovery.

Opel Mokka gets my vote :tiptoe:
it does come short though as far as power is concerned...I think it pushes about a 100Kw or so...

Well budget is about 650k, rather generous but I need this vehicle to last north of 7 years so the money put aside has to match the timeframe. Any reason why to steer clear of the disco?

E83 X3 3.0i would fill your requirements, depends on what your budget is like though.
Indeed that should meet what I am looking for, however I am a little wary if there are any major issues with the E83 range. I'm also wondering how it does offroad.

Q3 is a nice option, I had a look and seems favourable, but many options for it though hey?

Indeed, who knew there were this many E83 X3's!

Well it is smaller but I will have a look at it, you never know what you may just find!

are you into off-road activities as well?

what is your budget like? any fuel concerns? need maintenance plans?

Well I need something that can do some off-roading as the places where I work sometimes have no roads, so a little off-road credential would be nice. Budget is around 650k, I need this to last north of 7 years. Ideally would like it to be as light on fuel as possible, maybe somewhere closer to 9L/100km but willing to compromise. Maintenance plan preferred but not essential.

I have a 2.0d x3 sportpack for sale in the sale section. Super clean, white, FSH
Thanks BuFFy_ZA, I will have a look.

Has anyone had a look at the Cherokee? It seems to have some decent power in V6 choice and many options standard. Never owned anything from the Americans so not sure how well they are.

Edit: I had a look at the Discovery, I think they are slightly mad with their pricing!

New shape Fortuner, should be here by end of the year or early next year!!

There are big specials on outgoing shape, but since you want to keep it so long I would wait for new shape.

Then if u want a really comfortable 4x4 that comes with everything, including a fridge!! I would suggest a Prado, u won't buy new, but should find a facelift model. Mine is a 2011 and has 120000km, trouble free. It's not as fast and refined as the others but man it goes anywhere!!

Also new Ford Everest is due soon!!

But these are bigger SUV, just text them out because when you used to the space you will wonder how people cope in smaller SUVs

Out of your list, looking at long term ownership and therefore reliability and resale value you can only choose between the Rav and the CRV

Fortuners is very high risk, so if you travel a lot with family please scrap that idea. At R750k you can get a pretty decent Grand Cherokee brand new.
I drove one the other day, off road capabilities is awesome, lots of space and I know of a dealership giving huge discounts, as the new Grand Cherokee will be here in the next year.

As Bernard said, Ford Everest is due to be launched soon. If you are looking for something in line with the CRV or Rav, then don't overlook the Ford Kuga. Premium vehicle feel and features for a very reasonable price.

Just some 2 cents...

Misses has a Freelander 2 2.2 diesel. Car has been fantastic and no issues. It has clocked 100k kms in the 2.5 years she has had it bought it with 70k and now on 180k. It has done some incredible off roading no problem either (Hennops mountain trail, the swamp there wading up to its bonnet in water/slush) I really cant say anything bad only good! The only bad are the agents that rip you blind for servicing etc after plan - which we have found a specialist in Midrand that it now goes to for a 3rd of the price!

It depends on what you say Discovery Sport - are you talking about the model just released that has in effect replaced the Freelander? If so I tend to think they are expensive although they are beautifully made! the motor in that is the same 2.2 diesel (Ford engine - also in the Ranger) and it has 140kw. Other thing on the Disco Sport is that it seems to have gotton smaller in space terms in the rear compared to the Freelander in my view - seems more claustrophobic - just my opinion.

If you look at the Disco 4 - they are in a different league - very sorted and don't really give issues - there used to be problems with the air suspension but that was addressed from 2011 onwards - the main problem is the compressor unit was invariably damaged by jacking the car at the wrong point. Disco 4 however would be a second hand buy at 650k but you have the choice of the V8 or the more practical 3L v6 diesel with I think 188kw. People that say bad things about them are generally folk that have not had one and are going off hear say based on the old Disco 1's that were quite unreliable.

It all depends on what you are wanting to primarily use the car for, how much space you require from a family aspect, would it be a go-away car, would you tow, would you go bundu bashing etc etc.

You should ideally join the 4x4community forum for this but here is my advise. I recently was looking to replace the Patrol and teh X5 in swoop to get something that could tow the caravan (power), tow the caravan offroad and be a frugal mothership taking the kids to school.

Disco has a grenade v6 diesel. The 4x4community if full of "another dead disco" threads. Where there is smoke there is fire.

BMW X lack off road cred and X3 just looks crap (sorry, only my opinion). Would consider an X5 that fits into my price range.

Freelander 2 is a definite option.

For me the Jeep Grand Cherokee won out. The VM 3.0CRD is better than the outgoing Merc diesel. It has very good offroad cred and will hold with a disco (apparently). Powerful. And lordy lordy it looks damn good. Build on the Merc Ml chassis so quality there. Interior is abit on the plasticy side but you can get very high spec compared to equivelant Disco etc.

Not exactly a small SUV though.

Towing?
Offroading?
Lugging kids around?

Also what amount of KM's are to be done per month?

With this budget I would seriously consider the Kuga (Titanium) 2.0 Turbocharged EcoBoost AWD Auto (177kW/340Nm) and still have a lot of change left.

Go drive one before you form an opinion.....

Steer clear of the 1.5 ecoboost - its a gas guzzler of note regardless of what the dumb salesman might try and rub off.

For the past 2 weeks I have had the opportunity to drive around in the upcoming Ford Everest.
Also a very nice vehicle, but not my cup of tea. The Fortuner will be dethroned with this one:tiptoe:

7 Years is a long time for a SUV , Especially a JEEP. (I speak from experience)

My Shortlist would be :

New Fortuner
New Everest
Second Hand X5

I did have a look at this option but I am a little wary as Fortuners seem to be in season for thefts. Especially since I need this vehicle to be a family vehicle, but the new one looks really nice so may be worth a good look.

Now that is an option I have not had a look at, Prado may be too big for what I need but then again it's like the camel of offloading with that monster fuel tank! I'm hoping that the Everest is at a good price point. The issue I have with the RAV and CRV is that the power is not ideal for what I would like to use it for. I'm also looking at features and nice to haves considering the timeframe I would like to keep it and the RAV and CRV don't have things like navigation. Sure I can get a standalone unit but I guess it has to be a compromise between resale and maintenance and nice shiny things.

This is good news as I really like the shape of the Grand. Perhaps a bit bigger than what I need, hence why I had a look at the Cherokee.I agree with the FOrtuner high risk, not sure why that has become the case.

I will have a look at this, I believe it has very decent power and handles like a car. Perhaps not much off-road capability but price point is very good!

Am talking about the Freelander replacement. Seems like it is priced out of range of it's competitors and options are expensive. Disco 4 has been banned, missus thinks it looks like a bread van. :=):

Yes the Grand is a bit larger than what I need hahaha, but no doubt it is beautiful. I like to find something that can give me good value and that may just be the Cherokee with all it's standard kit in Limited guise.

Mostly for lugging kids and Mrs. around and the 2 dogs for vet duty. Also a bit of offloading but nothing strenuous, just for when the road ends and I need to continue. KM's varies, sometimes as low as 5k up to about 20k a month. Just depends where I am assigned.
