Thanks again guys!
Had a good look around the net for some deals. Found a 323i, 325 and 328i all reasonably priced but now the problem comes in with insurance.

A 318i or Motorsport is ok for insurance, anything bigger I'm either paying R2k and up per month or they won't insure me at all... thats my age I guess :(
Any suggestions on a decent insurance place for a young driver? lol. Been looking at Outsurance so far who seem to have the cheapest options.

R2k thats ridiculous i pay R700 for mine... i would find alternative ways to insure it or just get 3rd party...

3rd party is apparently the same thing, too young - must be 25 and up.
Quoting for the 318 Motorsport is even sitting just below R900/ month :( DAH!

Who do you insure with moranor?

Try these guys...One Call Insurance...that's where i'm insured...was the cheapest option so far, also shopping around, Hollard would be the next best one IMO.

One Call - 011 381 5708
Hollard - 0800 202 853

Hope it helps.

I use budget insurance. Paying R695 a month on an E90 320i but I'm also 28. The thing is, you can reduce the pricing by looking at what is covered and what you are willing to live with. For example, if you don't want road side assistance, then that will bump off X off your payments.

Another is obviously the excess. But it's difficult for a guy under R25 to keep payments down I think. Especially if you have never had comprehensive insurance. For me, I've been using 3rd-party insurance for the last 6-7 years which counts for absolutely nothing. I've been on comprehensive for less than a year now. Had I been on comprehensive from the start my payments would probably be cut in half.

Luckily I've had comprehensive insurance on the crawlX.. or the donkey balls RunX, whatever the name is now ;) for just over 2 years.
After some bargaining with OutSurance, I've managed to get the following quotes:

E36 318 Motorsport II - R800
E36 323 - R900

Both with an excess of R3000, which really isn't that bad, considering I'm already paying R860 for the RunX.
So, 323i it is then? Or do I go for the Motorsport and slowly build up the BMW family?

Haha!
Maybe I'll get S///Mon to get insured, I'll be listed as the secondary driver. He's enough of a toppie to pay less insurance :)

@S///Mon: LOLcakes! To me, you're a toppie. Maybe I can just turn the 328 track car into my every day BMW. You never know ;)

@moranor: True. Could have worked last year, I don't live in the same house anymore though. Growing up means getting rid of the Toyota and moving out. I don't mind paying that in all honesty. It's a couple bucks more than the RunX insurance for some reason...

Thanks again for the suggestions guys, hopefully we'll see a thread pop-up soon with pics of my BMW

Brother Jeff all I can say is welcome to the E36 Straight Edge Society :)

I know that feeling you went through :excited: I was never a bmw fan until i drove a E36 328i and since then I used the car for over a year before it was sold :bawling: my only regret was not buying it :banghead:

I drove both E36 and E46 models but for some reason I still prefer the E36 bmw :dunno:

Between the 318is and the 323i, i would say go for the 318is :thumb: reason being the 318is is lighter on fuel and since you already have a 328i, there is hardly any difference in fuel consumption between the 323i and 328i

A lot of the insurers who have those dumb adverts on TV (Outsurance, Dial Direct, Budget, etc) won't insure you on a "performance" car if you are under 25, EVEN IF you are listed as the secondary driver. I came across this issue with my car so I looked at the real insurers like Hollard, Mutual and Federal, etc and got an amazing deal with me as the primary driver and i'm well under 25.

Shop around and speak to a broker, combining policies like household insurance reduces your monthly premium by several hundred rand, yes HUNDRED rand.

Good luck :thumb:

@Bayn46: Thanks man, will get some quotes going from the companies you've mentioned :)

budget insurence... pay R600 for a 323i e46 2001 (25)

They are pretty strict on the sub 25 rule so you either need to get lucky with the salesperson you get on the phone or get told a big no.

Places like Budget don't have real consultants so they just give you some basic package that costs a rip off amount of money whereas the real consultants who work for places like Mutual and Federal or Hollard work out the best package for you. I was quoted between R600 and R1800 for my car and those were the places that would insure an under 25.
