looking at a 335i

Howdy guys,

Introduced myself a few days ago in the introduction area, very nice forum you guys have!

I currently own a 2006 Audi A3 2.0T sportback DSG, with software DP and intake.

The time has come for an upgrade, and I am currently looking at getting a 335i. My budget is set at R350k, and would prefer the n54 with DCT.

Just a few questions, I have tried searching the forum and net but not getting the answers I am looking for. So would appreciate it if you guys could please assist me? :=):

As I have stated I would prefer the n54, which year did the 335i's switch to the n55 motor? the reason why I would prefer the n54 is because I will be modding the car with a JB4 and exhaust, and from what I have gathered the n54 seems to take to modding very well, is this the case?

And considering there aren't to many n54's with the DCT trans how does the steptronic trans compare?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated and sorry for all the noob questions.

Are You looking for a coupe or sedan? As far as I know the n55 was introduced late 2009. Dct is not available on 335 as far as I know, I think only the 135 comes with dct... kiss had a nicely modded 335 coupe so he will give excellent advise.

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for clearing that up for me as someone I know has an 08 335i and is under the impression it is DCT because it has the paddleshifts...:biglol:

@firoze, I'm looking at the sedan, so steptronic it will have to be

Sage I've got the first...planning a second and looking to go coupe none the less :) but for me it will only be a weekend car and not daily.

Secondly, you can pick up quite a bit of 335i face lifts within your budget. Some with spectacularly low mileage. Under R280k, you can still get 2009 face lifts with quite a bit of extras. Just check the gum, olx and auto trader. Standard bank repos website has some as well.

yup only dct in coupe.

i have 2 kids. one is 2 years old and i have a 135i. not as big a problem as people think. i also enjoy the fact that there are no back doors and windows that the kids can fiddle with. both kids love the car. had it since my youngest was a newborn.

my wife has a new 4 door VW, but she is happy when we take my car :dunno:

different strokes I guess. Good luck with your search :thumb:

Hi Guys,

So just an update, so now that I am back in the country I went and looked at two 335i's this morning.

First one was at menlyn bmw, 09 with 56k on the clock. On the test drive without even pushing it as the car was not warm yet and I have a lot of mechanical sympathy for cars it went into limp mode and the engine light came on? pulled into a petrol station and restarted the car and drove off only for it to go into limp mode again.... first impression :nonono:

Second one I saw was in Benoni, also 09 with 53k on the clock and in white and with the 18" rims I like and in very good condition:inlove: , only to be let down by being told I can only take the car for a test drive once I have sent through the documents and applied for finance?? So tomorrow I will stop past and take it for a test drive and hopefully take it from there.

Just a quick question, from which year did bmw fit the 335i with the oil cooler?

If I am not mistaken all local cars from start of production have the oil cooler. Mine is a sport pack 2008 with it. I am sure the normal ones have it too. If you look at the drivers side front fender liner in front of the wheel you can see the rear grill of the oil cooler.

Haha, how did you get that right? My wife is too spoilt, I bought her a Toyota Prado 18 months ago just after our 1st born was born, she loves it because she just throws the kitchen sink in and it all fits, the F30 is "too small" for her and she bitches, but she loves the power and the ride. Now expecting our 2nd baby, so definitely be using the Prado on family outings!

Anyway Sageman hope you find your perfect 335i, and speak to Mr Smooth, he has an awesomely powerful car!!! Plus he can clean up any carbon build up in the motor!

So I went past to have a second look at the white 335i and take it for a test drive but unfortunately it didn't happen. The car was washed and parked in an area of better lighting and on finer inspection i picked up some hail damage.... :argh:

At the right angle and light i could see a few dimples all over the car so i have unfortunately walked away from the deal. They have offered to send the car in to get fixed but i just don't want any hassles or issues with panelbeaters etc

I received a call from the bmw dealer that i went and had a look at the first 335i and they have managed to fix the issue. According to the salesman it was a vacuum issue hence the car going into limp mode.

I am very impressed with bmw, as they will be bring the car to me in edenvale to take for a test drive, great service and happy to see they are willing to go the extra mile to accommodate me! So holding thumbs for tomorrow

@george smooth, thanks for info
