Living with E64 M6 out of motolan

I recently sold my E46 M3 Vert. I was looking at relaxing it with the E92 m3 vert until I looked closely at the E64. I know it's a completely different breed of car but the value for money makes it difficult to ignore. I'm highly considering it but I would first like to make a bit of research as far as maintenance is concerned.
Could the M6 owners or anyone knowledgable advice? Service, brakes, oil, common problems to look out for etc. thanks.

These were my average Dealership costs on my E46 out of motor plan:
Inspection 2: about R7000
Brake discs and Pads: about R15000 for front ones (changed them at 60k)
Oil service : 3000

I know it's probably more for the V10

I would go for the E93 M3. Maintenance on the M6 should be just as bad as the E60 M5 out of motorplan, when something goes wrong (ie SMG) you are in for one hefty bill.

There was a thread about maintenance of the M5 out of motorplan, the general consensus was that it was way too risky.

I Thot they ironed all the teething problems with SMG III ?
The value for money of the E64 vs E93 makes it such a difficult choice.
You can pick up a immaculate 07 E64 with less than 60ks for just over 400k. Whereas a 08 similar condition e93 is still over 500k

purchasing an 08 335 means its almost if not out of m/ plan.
consider the new costs of extending the plan to those of the service out of m/ plan on the M6.

We had one of the early E60 M5's and it honestly spent the same time on the road as it did at bmw, be it SMG updates, oil change(it took 2 weeks....) Replacing the diff etc.

Although an E64 M6 with an exhaust still sounds and looks so good! :fencelook:

I just read the M5 thread. Some guy stated that the M6 seemed 2 b more reliable than the M5 (don't understand how that could be though).

Murphy's Law states that the one you love the most, gives the most sh1t

Lets face it, the only time the E93 M3 outshines the M6, is on the Track.
Such a pity, I'm really falling for the E64.

Plus one. Maybe go for a coupe instead of a vert?

I've got a M6 Coupe.... its out of plan now. Its been reliable ...no more unusual maintenance than any other car. I've replaced the alternator (8k + labour). and that's it. On Motorplan it had the usual clutch replacement and Vanos done. Nothing out of the ordinary there. Im going to do the fuel pump and filters as preventative maintenance in a month. That should cost about 10k minimum.

Bottom line...it is an M6 and it is BMW's flagship car. Dont expect it to be cheap to run. Dont expect it to be "good on gas". But... its a very fast comfortable sports GT that very few cars can compare to. You will love it... find one with lots of stuff done on Motorplan.

And yes...the M6's are more reliable....my brother had the V10 M5...his car always sat in the workshop.

Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks for the input. Lol yeah u certainly don't buy a V10 with fuel in mind and I'm convinced the consumption isn't that different to the M3 anyway.
Care to share how much the regular oil and service costs?
Thanks.

The standard features of a M6 are out of this world:inlove:
You'll never exhaust all those bells and whistles. :=):

The withdrawal symptoms of jumping out of a E46 M3 Vert to a Coupe, would be unbearable. Claustrophobia :fencelook:

Once you've owned a vert it's difficult to switch to a coupe or sedan.

I've had mine since 2008 / 20,000km on the clock. Its been on Motorplan (extended ) until last year. Ive not yet had the need to oil service it... interval says 20,000km odd more... so i cant comment on dealer costs yet. But... i do an oil change every 10,000km irrespective of service lights. This car uses 9 litres of oil ...TWS at R135 a litre + filter at R300 and labour. Not bad at all.

Get to know a good independent BMW technician. Get yourself a good obd2 diagnostic system.... plenty out there and well worth the investment. You will have fun owning and maintaining your beast.

ps: M6 about 4l/100km heavier than M3 in urban use. But long range on the open road is tops... 600km easy on a tankfull. i even get mine in the 9l/100km's range when cruising.
