Launch of Xdrive1 (pics)

Always nice to attend a BMW function of sorts, wether it is the launch of a new model or their annual budget speech function...it is always meticulously planned and you can be assured of good food or snacks. The launch of the X1 was accompanied with the usual sleek advertising with the focus on the "joy" of driving. Its hard to associate an all wheel drive or an on- and offroader with the concept "joy". It works for the new Z4 making rainbow donuts on the showroom floor, but one is not entirely convinced about the same concept in a larger than life example of a mini-me X5...so i would like to test the Xdrive on the shitty roads of Stellenbosch and experience the "joy" for myself and see if BMW succeeded in making the concept fit for this model.

Donford knows how to throw a party.
We were greeted with this veiled model, anticipating to bare it all.

But there were no ooohs or aaaaaahs...just a luke-warm clapping of hands...the wrong colour (silver) for this model was chosen for the main room and occasion. On the other side of the complex were white and black ones and were far more striking. I think BMW is deliberately promoting the silver, because it does not bring out the agressiveness and at the same time sleekness of the curves...kind of looked bulky and choppy & not sleek, round and curvy as in white. :thinker:

I went to the launch last night in Midrand. Must say, going in I thought the car looked ugly (in pictures). But it looks a lot better in the metal...

I love the X1 in white, and brown (havanna brown?). But even in silver it looks good, especially the rear profile.

agree with ya all...the lighting at the launch venue did not flaunt the shape well...in the sunlight, on the road and in motion one will appreciate the X1 more...

I drove this thing today... and i actually quite liked it.
Looks much better than the X3.
But 480k for the 2.0d?
Thats if I got the price right.

Slightly off topic, but why did the 123d never come to SA. Read about it in BMW mag a while ago and it seemed like an awesum engine.

Heard some story about our poor fuel quality, but now this engine arrives in X1 format ???

its very pricy indeed...Revo, i think i will still get the (Jimny Suzuki)...brand new for R179 000...and it can cope with the farm roads...what do you think? And maybe keep the rest of da cash for the new M5 when it lands...???:thinker:...will Rennzport help with da installments??? :)

that sounds like a much better plan Twinz.
Sure Rennzport will pay the installments... as long as it's paying for 2 (black and white, ok)

DV.. I'll check up on those prices again.
