Knocking Sound

Hi Guys,

is it normal to hear like a Knocking Sound on pull off after putting in 1st gear I hear it sometimes in my car and my brothers E90 also had the same sound....

my friend said his E90 has like a shudder when he pulls off what could this be?

I thought it was normal because its a back wheel drive once you put in first gear and pull off I though the knock was just the drive shaft clicking in??

Is it the Diff?? or what does it mean?

My car is a E46 318i

It could be any of the following

Rear shock mounts
Diff mounts
Rear trailing arm bushes

Any of the above could be the issue. Get it checked out and let us know on the outcome.

Your car should have no knocking whatsoever :thinking:

I'd be very worried if my car was knocking somewhere.

Hi ChefDJ,

My friends E90, He said its when he pulls off or when he gears down its almost like as if its slipping and then it grips...
When he pulls off he thought maybe it was his clutch control but its not...

he has replaced the dif recently with a reconditioned one.

Have you check to see if anybody is in the boot?

1. Open boot.
2. find guy in boot.
3. Tell guy to stop knocking on takeoff.
4. Close boot.
5. Drive off (no knock - problem fixed, knocking present - see number 1.)

I find turning up the radio volume about 5 notches usually cures any annoying creaks/rattles/knocks
