Killing a gearbox

Hi,

So I'm speaking to ZF to get a service kit for my 6 speed manual. They asked me if I've drained the oil already. As new oil can kill a gearbox :flyfun: .

Surely this is a load of shit?

I thought they were supposed to be transmission experts? Why do then then even sell service kits for gearboxes?

What is your take on this? And do you think it is necessary for me to change the filter and everything in the gearbox since its out the car already?

Thanks

Heard of horror stories after people drained and filled their gearboxes with new oil :fencelook:

When i had my diff changed at Ross Ducan.

I asked him if i should change the gearbox oil, he said no need to change the gearbox oil ever.

My friend at BMW as well told me that changing the oil with new oil is not always a good idea.

So there must be something behind their reasoning.

So I've been having issues with my gearbox. Its been in 3 times already and the third time they flushed the gearbox 3 times and reset software/adaptations.

Here is an excerpt of the mail I sent to the service manager at Sandton Auto after the oil was changed.

I’ve driven about ½ the distance of the 1000kms suggested by BMW Motorplan and the ZF specialist and thought it appropriate to give you an update.

So far, I’ve not experienced any improvement with the gear changes. The hard shifting when I pull off (engaging 1st gear?) is still happening frequently. Where initially the gears would shift hard between 2-3, it seems that an intermittent “kick from behind” sensation is also happening at moderate speeds now as well, sometimes up to 6th gear. Last week Friday I also experienced the car rolling back on an incline after taking my foot off the brake – didn’t know autos could/should do that? This morning, while pulling out of the driveway at home the accelerator pedal was basically pressed down almost half way before the car started to move, like there was some sort of dead spot. I didn’t get that again after leaving home.

So they changed the oil in my car, but it hasnt made a difference for me, or killed my gearbox...yet. Unfortunately Motorplan will only fix this on a "trial and error" basis, even though they know about the problem and have service bulletins for it. :flyfun:

ZF guy must be confused with an AUTO box...

Possibly she was saying something like the clutches wear in the gearbox and then when you change to the new oil it can kill the gearbox? Do manual gearboxes have clutches inside?

i took my car to ZF to get a quote on changing the oil of my auto box,the guy said the oil must be changed every 60000km,my car was on 86k and he said it will be risky to change the oil because it might start slipping after and it would be better to leave it like that since its working fine.
he said they can do the oil change at my own risk for R5600. :fencelook:
my conclusion is if its no broken I'm not touching it.many people have gone past 200k km without having any problems with the auto box.

Plenty auto's on this forum with over 200km on with the original box never touched.

Mine is one. Gordon has a 528i with 420xxxkm on...

The first 2 times it was done when my Grandfather owned the car so Im not sure, the 3rd time I used castrol transmax I can remember which one tho but it was a big 5l bottle this was 2 years ago this made the biggest improvement on the gearbox.
