just bought a 320d e90 2005, got some questions

Good day everyone

I just bought this car, getting it tomorrow. They just sorting out some scratches and stuff.

I hope you guys can help me though...
It does not have rft's on, so I need to get a spare tyre. Is it possible to do some conversion in the boot, or will I have to do a spare tyre in a blanket thing? Advise? Link to where this have been discussed?

Is there anything I should look out for on this 320d (its the base model)? its got 128000km on, which I dont think is to bad. Is there any known common part failure, to be replaced with better aftermarket parts?

I have emailed Revo for a qoute on black kidneys already, :rollsmile: but what can I do performance wise to this car? Link to where its been discussed?

Apologies for my uselessness with the search function and a lengthy introduction

I have the exact same model, 2005 E90 320D. they are excellent piece of machinery and i have not had any major issues with it yet

I think the search function is outdated and needs attention...:idea:

1. Insist on a full service history.

2. The known parts are the turbo; battery should be finished by now; aircon probably empty; forgotton the name of the "belt" that is prone to failure.

3. Get four non slip corner plastic brackets to hold the spare wheel in place. Invest in RFTs...the latest brand. Start with two rear RFTs.

So there is no conversion to get a marie biskuit fit into the boot?
I actually wanted to stay with the normal tyres, not only for the cost but I was hoping for a softer ride. taking into account that I am a noob with RFT's.

I have non run-flats with a tyre repair kit in the boot. portable compressor as well.

When it comes to body styling, look no further. Any ideas on what you want your cabbie to look like

Can you guys feel a difference in the harshness of bumps and stuff through the car between driving on rft's and not?
Tyre repair kit + compressor sounds like a good idea for now :)

Using non-run flat tyres is a bit softer but not by a lot. I had 17" run flat and changed to 18" normal tyres.
Sitting in the front does not feel that bad and I guess I got used to the ride on the Sports suspension, but if you ask my wife, that sits at the back all the time, she will tell you a different story.
I sat at the back once (not sure why) and she drove over a bump, the ride at the rear is a lot different to the front. Much harder on the spine sitting at the back compared to the front. Guess the profile of the rear has something to do with this

I have a 2006 320d with non run flats.... rides alot better for me:rollsmile:

Also mine has 212 000km on her and the only major problems i had was the vibration damper pulley (replaced 3 times already)

Oh and i had some problems with the fuse holder thing on the battery but LZ sorted that out for me in a few minutes....

anyway welcome you going to love the car... they awesome!!!

and i just keep a spare in the boot....

yeah I got one of those compressor things free when i purchased my car I also have runflats nice if you far away from anywhere you can pump up the Flat runflat and its back to normal no 80km/h max speed.

The BMW one is nice it costs about R2k but its in a nice carry bag it come with the compressor and the liquid to put in the tyres fits nicely where the spare wheel should be

I would go run flats though you don't want to be caught at the side of the road with your BMW using your compressor thingy to fill up your tyres thats a good reciepy for getting hijacked and shot.

Also if your wife drives it she will not mess up your rims when she has a flat and doesn't realize. :) Even though there is a big F^&king red light on the dash.

I also have non RFT's and opted to get a spare wheel in a nice slim fit bag, which just lays in the boot, the cool thing is it doesnt use much space and i am actually happy with it. The cool thing is i can spin my rear tyres like a crazy and not wory about about spending loads of money per RFL if its worn out :=):

Hey Drugekull, i am sensing sum anger issues you hav with your wife using your car. I think if the car dont say "check the F*%king Tyres" they think nuthing is wrong :roflol:

Really drives nice. Just got some rattles I dont like. The rear window break light seems loose, will have to look at that and so on.

And I did not get a flippen book! Will go moan about that tomorrow, but otherwise, can anyone help me with a downloadable version somewhere?

I will look at getting that BMW kit for the tyres, can always take it out when I buy my next Bimmer!

Sandman, can you tell me more about that slimfit bag please?

Just noticed something in your attached pic, those aren't BMW OEM wheels - they look like M6 reps which I doubt would be compatible or up to the spec for RFT's. So investigate this first. I gather the car is out of motorplan looking at the mileage, so you have the option to use non-RFT's without having to worry about motorplan having issues. But important to let your insurance know about this since RFT's are considered a safety feature for these cars.

I have a motoquip electric pump, although I am running RFT's. The space-saver is always a good plan and should be able to be anchored in place in the boot - of course lose some boot space.

If I was in your shoes I would do one of the following:

Search gumtree for used good condition E90 wheels. For RFT's the ideal size is 17" from cost and comfort point of view. And then avoid narrow/wides if you can help it. Best and most affordable RFT's are the Hankook S1 Evo 225/45R17!!

Other option is to go for non-RFT's and then I would say go 18" narrow/wides with the space-saver in the boot.

I didnt even think of letting the insurance know. Will do that.

I dont really want to change my wheels, I like them :)
I am moaning for an extra rim, will see what I get, but think I will still go for a space saver or the compressor/patch kit.

You can jus request the slim fit bag wen you buy the space saver tyre from most bmw agents, i got the 17' spare, cause i hav 18' rims. I think it has the bmw logo on it, i can take a pic for u if u want, but u hav to vote for me in the cape town calendar submission page :idea:

I didn't know hankook sold runflats

I always overspent on Bridgestones

Do you know how much they go for?
