Maybe the neighbour was afraid he would end up having to buy a new computer box for your car, if he makes a mistake.

Neighbour not helping because he is afraid of blowing something, is better than you shopping for a new ECU !
Or, he could have been really helpful and taken both batteries out of the 2 cars, put his good battery into Ians car and then swopped them back once the car was running.

But, that was too much of a hassle for the box...:)

This is not recommended by the BMW service manual but I guess it could have worked.

+1 Well my 2c worth- about a year ago a friend of mine wanted me to assist with a jump start. I actually rather removed my car's battery and placed in his car- started the car and took out my battery again. Well it worked and so Ian I agree your neighbour is a big box.:spit:

No way I am removing my battery, Having all my ECU settings reset (Car being jumpy again), programming all the onboard computer funtionality, activating secret menus again, all radio setting out. Then whoever must think I am a Box, but I'll still be happy. I'll borrow you the jumper cables, you'll just have to stop some passerby to get your car jump started though. Also depends how good looking the women asking is.
