Jezebel Engine Rebuild... Part 2

Burgy

///Member
We went from planning the Supercharger build to having to fix the motor :argh:

On initial inspection, it looked a lot worse, we thought the cylinder wall was damaged and the head looked like a lost cause. But once we cleaned the underside of the head we saw that the damage was fixable.

Luckily, all the parts can be replaced and the head can be repaired!

Just confirmed the order for the new goodies, so hopefully Jezzy should be harassing everyone on the streets pretty soon :bravo:

Sheesh not the kind of thing you want to happen, and not the engine you want it to happen to :(

So any ideas as to why this happened? To the best of my knowledge e46 M3 valves are insane strong

Yup, you read it right.

Jezebel is having her engine rebuilt... somewhat, again.

Some of you may know that I took her to the track this weekend, and well, she didn't even get to finish 2 laps before she through a valve and ate a spark plug.

Yes my fanatic friends. My beautiful BMW M3 that I've had for only 3 weeks through a valve after only doing 2 laps of Zwartkops raceway.

The car is with Burgy's mechanic Lee, who has already stripped the motor down. Cylinder 6 was the culprit. The Piston is ruined, and the head is pretty scratched too. General consensus says that the valves were worn out pretty bad and this was bound to happen sooner or later.

So, I've already ordered 24 new high performance Valves from VAC and one new CP piston to replace the damaged piston. The head is about to go off to be repaired and I got to sit and wait for the new parts to arrive before the rebuild can take place.

Someone said to me that if it seems to good to be true, it often is. I do somewhat feel this is the case, but I'm not going to give up on Jezebel.

Here are the pics--

that was me, and now i feel really kak. sorry man i hope i didnt summon murphy on you. all the best.

Thanks Sank, I have no idea how this happened. But Lee reckons its from excessive wear, and from doing some research, apparently the OEM valves are two parts welded together which are not as strong as the new valves I am getting which are ONE part.

That being said, from what I understand, the Valve broke at the top where its in touch with the rockers.

And I'm guessing these valves are in bad condition due to the worn out exhaust cam and rockers that I had inside the engine, which Sav replaced not more than 2 weeks ago.

Now had it been an install error on SAV's part, logic then tells me that all 12 valves on the exhaust side would have bent and failed.

Only one did.

So... I'm extremely pissed off, and amazed at my bad luck. This is putting the supercharge build off for sometime as the money I had for that build is now being used to repair Jezebel.

Its a ballache, but hey, I got damn lucky for getting Jezebel at the price I did with all the parts she comes with.

I'm going to make sure this engine is bullet proof after this build.

Since you guys are still awake...:=):

What is it going to cost to fix her now?

Thats still under debate at this moment.

Burgy's got me a good deal on parts, but we are not sure yet on what it will cost to fix the head yet. Once the Lee gets back to me on cost for repairing the head and then labour, I can put together a price. But I'm probably looking at a bill of R30k depending.

Knowing my luck, the head will be totally fucked, and I'll have to get a new one. And just to piss on my parade even more, the cylinder that holds the damaged piston is probably scratched to shit, so that will need to be fixed too.

So... if thats the case. R50k up.

I'm crossing major fingers this side that the head can be fixed and the cylinder walls are ok.

Everyone tells me its not that bad... but I'm expecting the worst.

I'm trying to stay positive here, but I know how this works, one thing leads to another and there are so many hidden costs involved. I can't believe I've only had the car for 3 weeks and this is what I get.

Damn that is a huge potential cost.
Hopefully, it can be on the street soon at a more affordable cost.
