JB4 Logging + CANbus problems.

Hi guys,

I've got a bit of a unique problem and I'm starting to think I might have a faulty JB unit.

So here it goes:

I've got a weird problem where JB4 Mobile does not work properly when using the CANbus setup, I'm tapped into the blue and gray wires behind the OBD port for a more stealthy setup. I have full CANbus control when doing so (Flap opening and closing, map switching etc).

Problem:
With JB4 Mobile running, certain data like REV and AFR is delayed and only updates every now and then. Sometimes it stays stuck at 0. I'm using an OTG cable with android device (Dell Venue 7 Tablet). Its the same when logging with a laptop using the JB4 interface.

Also when JB4 mobile is "connected" CANbus controls no longer function, not sure if that's normal though.

No other devices on CANbus.

Things I've tried:

-2 other OTG cables,
-Reflashing firmware and older firmwares,
-Another Android device (Galaxy Note 3)
-Wires from CAT7 Lan cable from engine bay to keep wire resistance to a minimum.
-Checked USB serial connection on JB4 unit. Seems fine to me.

Vehicle is a 2013 PWG M135i Right hand Drive.

Here's a video of the behavior on JB4 Mobile, followed by a video of the behavior via the JB4 interface on a laptop.

Posi Tap Method.

Posi-Tap Setup works fine, or better at least...

So when using the posi taps logging is much better. Things like throttle, and Revs are now at least live. I have found AFR and Trim to sometimes freeze for a few seconds but disconnecting and reconnecting solves the problem.

Here's a video of logging behaviour via positap method on a laptop.

The only thing I haven't tried is the original Burger OBD cable but I don't see how that will benefit over tapping into the wires behind the OBD port as they also use the stealth method on some cars from what I have read.

I have posted on N54tech but it seems that even Terry has not encountered the problem before. Obviously they don't have access to right hand drive PWG M135i's, so I'm hoping someone here might have an idea as to where the problem lies. :smashScreen:

New theory.

The TTL 232R chip in the BMS USB cable might be faulty. From what I understand the JB4 uses 3 wires from the chip, Ground, Data up(Tx) and Data down (Rx). Considering I have no problem with uploading new maps or switching maps via Tablet or laptop I think the problem might be with Rx. Maybe the chip is struggling to process received data?

Only way I can test that is with another cable -_-

Hi,
I am using the same set up with stealth tap to obd wires . No issues or lags as you are encountering.
I suggest try another jb usb cable to rule that out 1st.

Getting a cable today,

Terry has e-mailed me some firmware to try in the meantime. Will let you guys know how it goes.

EDIT:

Did not work. Off to get a USB serial cable.

So I've been struggling to get a cable. X-mas season and all... Looks like I'll have to hang tight till next week unless I can find someone with cables in stock. :blueCry:

Sorry bud. Where are you located? Maybe another fanatic could lend you to test.

Hey bud. I'm in PTA/JHB depending on the day. I got hold of another cable... Well, I made one. Anyway, same problem. So its not the cable.

Only thing I can try now is to swap the physical JB unit itself with someone else and test. Its a quick test as the harnesses are left in place and just the unit is plugged in. The hard part is now getting someone willing to help out, especially this time of year.

1. Where did you get the Jb from?

2. Does the car drive as it should on the various maps? Or is it just a question of the Jb not connecting to the JB mobile?

Another Sponsor on the forum.

From what I can tell yes. Running map 2 currently.

Jb4 connects to JB Mobile but doesn't display parameters correctly, not on Laptop either. Have a look at the video's posted above, especially laptop one. Cant see revs, trims, afr etc etc even when using a laptop. Making it impossible to log when using OBD method.

Have you guys seen anything similar on a PWG M135?

Terry has concluded that the M135 has different Canbus protocols or my unit is faulty.

Contact the forum advertiser that sold the unit to you. Maybe its the wrong or faulty unit.

Advertiser has no stock :blueCry:

If anyone would be willing to let me plug their unit into my loom to do a quick test it would be much appreciated.

I want to get a custom tune done but need to get this sorted first.

1)If you switch back to posi-tap method and firmware, does it work ?
2) do you have anything plugged into the obd2 port itself ?

Nothing in else in OBD.

Posi taps don't always work. Sometimes things like gear selection or boost gets stuck or just do not get detected at all. Reconnecting a few times can solve the problem.

Definitely not normal behavior afaik.

If there's anyone in the JHB/PTA area willing to plug their JB4 into my wire loom to do a quick test I'll be more than happy to compensate them for their trouble. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Hey guys!

Good News!

Gert AKA Ratslaaf at OBDworx has come to the rescue!

Gert plugged into my OBD port and found that several modules were very outdated. The DME software has actually NEVER been updated and was still running the factory software which was 5 revisions behind.

:angry::angry::angry:

Can't believe BMW has not once bothered to update it. And I just had my 30k service a few months ago. Even running Map 0 the car feels completely different. My cluster has been updated and now shows M135i instead of MPerformance which is a nice little extra.

Anyway, after the update everything started functioning as it should.

:praise:Thanks to OBDWorx all is well!:clapper::ty:

It's only a pleasure bud. And it makes me happy to see that there are some bean counters that still have the soul to drive a lekker car. It's a beast and something to be proud of bud ;)
