Yea that's basically my point. A new car like an m4 at 1.2 bar is a guaranteed loss of at least R300k in 2 years. Given that this thread is discussing whether an m4 is worth the new purchase price in the first place, my argument is simply that a little patience can deliver a significant saving. It is the smarter way to buy a 'new' car..

The moment you drive off the dealer floor, you can kiss 10-20% of what you paid, goodbye. This has always been the case if you buying new, you just have to accept it.

Only non special non limited edition current model car I know of that holds its value is the Ferrari 458 italia... That car launched at a price in 2010 of just about R2.8m odd if I'm not mistaken ... I reckon 3 or 4 months from now the m4 will retail for under R1m... Scary part is if the current model is twice the price of the outgoing model when launched, and was about double the price of the model it replaced before it.... imagine what the price of the replacement model will be when it launches.... I think this all points to a bigger issue in SA... Soon cars will be a luxury a few can afford cause certainly people's earning power is not increasing at the same rate...

With our Rand the way it is against all major currencies, we really can't expect imported car prices to be reasonable even. Having said that the new M3 specs look absolutely great on paper. There's no escaping depreciation, but personally i don't believe the knock will be that great, in a few years from now.

My old man insists only a person with more money than sense buys a car brand new. Get a demo model with all the conceivable extras pre-loaded and pay significantly less. For some reason this M3 does not excite me like when the E46 M was launched. Some of the magic missing or maybe I'm just older. Very few cars actually appreciate in value like a mercedes pagoda. :fencelook:

Have to agree, The m4 price is something, I ordered one and Im pretty close to cancelling it so I can get an M135i and maybe something else. R1.2 mil is too much money for that car

Not going to take this car... Talked to the wife and her reaction: " it looks like a normal Bmw, it's too much... Is it faster than the golf? IS IT FASTER THAN THE 1m? Faster than Sheldon's car? Faster than R8? Buy a r8 convertible again, white with red top, so I can use it to work "... Sigh

I'll probably never in my life buy a brand new car. I too see no sense in it.

But also... I've always said that you never buy a BMW thinking of future sale price or depreciation. You buy it to keep it. Especially a 7 series. It depreciates faster than you can pay it off.

Eish I would have also gotten cold feet. Unless you have serious dosh or its a bucket list thing its a lot of dosh for that car.

So you have told us you had the cheque ready. Any ideas who its going to go to?

Bucket list won't be a Bmw... :)

Where is the cheque going to? Hmm.... No new car dealer... Not a r8 again... Had that and if I did the wife then will nag to use it (everyday). I'll see won't rush into a decision

We are being ripped off when comparing bmw prices to the US. I know we could say it's the economics, supply and demand , size of market etc etc .
For interest sake here are the facts :

3 series entry level sedan:
USA $32000 (R350224)
Vs
SA R376836($ 34432)
Seems fair right .

M235i
USA $43100 (R471708)
Vs
SA R539479($ 49292) - 14% more

But!!
M4 Coupe starting price:
USA $64000 (R700449)
Vs
SA R1016418 ($92870)
A whopping 45% more than the USA.

Why is the M4 pricing so vastly different ?
Extras? I don't think so . If it was so so , I will take a base M4 thanks .

I think these sports cars are priced high in SA because we are willing to pay the prices they demand.

The crap started when they priced the 435i so high , 42% higher than the US so the M4 had to follow suit.

I used the average exchange rate for September .

I did the similar calc with the golf 7r in the UK versus m4... With that the golf should have been R700k if priced in line like the M4

Funny thing in 2011 when I purchased the carrera
Gts Porsche didn't have a price for it in SA and the price was released in the UK and US. So I used the percentage difference from the carrera s and gt3 and have Porsche a price and said I'd pay that... They came back with that exact price I have them :)

All bmwsa is doing is milking the customers, especially with the M cars...

Even the bloody cigarette lighter is an optional extra.

So why cant motorplan be.

And motorplan is not standard throughout the world for BMW sales.

Other counties have plans as well, but not like this.

Could you imagine the choice of buying a car, paying x or x less 40% with motorplan.
