Issues driving a cold car

Hello, Hi, How are you?

So the AUDI had a small issue with some electronics and after AUDI did what they did they came back and told me the car is not reaching operating temps. Apparently my short journey to work does not give the car enough time to get the temps up and so that caused something to break and something... etc. I wasn't actually happy with that as the problem was with the gearbox and their BS explanation didn't make much sense anyways. I can't find anything on google regarding this.

What are the effects of driving a cold car over and over again?

Should I rather wake up then start it finish up my morning getting ready stuff then drive it... sounds rather wasteful on Diesel though.

It's a known diesel problem on older cars pre 2012 ish. Not 100% sure on the date. You have to go on a long trip fairly frequently to avoid it. The particulate filter clogs up if the car does predominantly short trips and causes some issues.

From what I have seen in the internet the 'worst' cars for this is audi and jag.

diesels do not get up to temp as fast as petrols, even when idling. I tried to get my car up to temp when i did my coolant flush..., was a waste of good fuel.

How long is your daily commute? type of roads? amount of traffic? highest speed?

This calls for a more enthusiastic drive on daily commute...:=):

On the reason for speeding ticket you can say, "I was trying to warm up the engine..."

How long is your daily commute? 1.4km one way
type of roads? Urban normal
amount of traffic? hardly any, there is a school along the way we slow down at but never to a stop
highest speed? 60kph - 70kph

Used to walk but... you know. Laziness

and it bums me that I have such a nice car wasting away in the garage when it could be driven... even for 5 minutes.

Why not take a longish drive at least once a week?

At 1.4km and based on the issues you are experiencing, it seems you are rather damaging it as opposed to parking it off.

I wouldn't consider it as wasting away, you are extending its longevity. If i wasn't doing the school run, I would be using a scooter/bike/cheapie/rust bucket as there is no place to enjoy my car even though i do almost 65km daily.

Simply change at red line, in each gear...to "avoid" pre-mature breakage!:hammerhead:

Wouldnt think new age diesels would have this type of issue. Considering combustion temperatures. Could expect that on old school 2 smokes, but new age diesel doesnt make sense.

The best way to get it up to temp before work would be to choose a BMW dealership about 20km away from work and trade it in.

I think the problem is emissions, manufacturers are forced to reduce emissions, the diesels have egrs and essentially run off exhaust gases at low speed and low revs. Only during WOT does the engine get a chance to clean out.

I drive a lot over the weekends though, thought that was enough but seems I need to get her moving during the week

My experience with Audi is the Stronic "remembers" your driving style -short distances, short gear changes etc. etc. This results in gearbox feeling a bit "jerky" or changes too quickly. Solved the issue on the So's car by hooning it a bit, kept the car in gear 3 gear (manual mode) close to rev limit for a while which solved the gearbox issue. The 1.4 km travel to work really won't make any impact on the temp gauge and should'nt be an issue. Or do as Nick suggested drive 20km trade it in at BMW, have a slightly better car - dependant on who you ask but have putrid service compared to Audi :tiptoe:

So what I am getting from everyone is to drive hard and generally let the girl run for a bit.

I am going to find a journey in and around Joburg somewhere close to home in case the car gives errors. Maybe he N1 N12 N3 ring twice...

Bmw designed the new b58 engine which is the x40i engines to keep a percentage of heat in the engine for up to 36 hours...

This is to combat premature engine wear and to help with fuel consumption and emmissions...

So not getting up to temps is an issue..

I would definitely suggest you walk to work.. or get a mtb bike or even an electric scooter...

Leave the car for weekends where you will probably drive a bit further than 2km..

Just a thought
