Is this E12 M535i expensive

Just popping from Europe although originally from your part of the world, many years ago :)

Not being up to date with used car prices in SA, would you say that this car is expensive? 350K km indicates that an engine/transmission rebuild is around the corner. Seller already admits that the paint has had it, and being based in CT, I imagine that there might be some rust to fix before painting.

Advert picture (1) from a window on a rainy day reveals nasty aftermarket alloys and nothing else. Inept advertiser or a dog of a car perhaps.

All in, I think R35 000 is a bit much - maybe R20K? Thoughts?

I would try to get the price down, of course the car will need a complete inpection to determine all damage (if any). Those motors are pretty strong but it would depend on the condition whether it would require a rebuild.
and be wary there might be lots of hidden problems

R20 000 Maximum

An owner who doesnt even know the correct spelling of the gearbox "Jetrag" instead of "Getrag" obviously doesn't know his car very well, so not so sure he looked after it.

The best old BMW's are those owned by mechs, or guys with a lot of technical knowlege to keep them going.

Carefull as a looked after BMW is a fantastic thing, but then because they are such technically advanced machines, there's probably no bigger POS than an abused BMW.

Thanks for the replies. It's more out of interest really. Here in Europe, all the E12's are rusted to bits and I have often thought about getting a rot-free E12 from SA and shipping it overseas for a strip-down, proper anti-rust treatment and some sorting out.

Over here, people are even trying to restore cars in this state :floggin:

Obviously the M535i is the one I would really like and I remember SA in the 80's being littered with E12s which were not rusting, especially on the highveld. Dad had a 1981 518 2.0, and later a 1984 518i, and my sister had 3 528i's and an M535i (although most were stolen - the 535 lasted a week before someone had it - I never actually saw it).

Reading through this forum though, I guess a good E12 is a rare thing in SA too nowadays. Maybe I'll pop out to SA at some point and go and see what's out there.

Right now I have 2 BMW's, a 1998 E39 528i and a 2006 E60 535d M Sport

Nice to meet you folks BTW :)
