Is it just me 1 vs 3

So is it just me?

Or is the equivalent 3 series cheaper to that of its 1 series counterpart. Been checking out auto trader as I always do, and one thing I always noticed, that the same year model, same km's say the 1 series always seems a bit more expensive, making the 3 series more value for money. I know more 3 series models was sold in higher volumes then a 1 series, especially in sport trim.
I find it a bit strange.

You probably answered your own question Sabre, guess it comes down to supply and demand. Due to there being more 3's available on the secondhand market prices are reduced. The smaller number of 1's available almost creates a bit of a niche market for them, resulting in stronger pricing....

In that case one might as well buy a 3 series then. For the same money you can actually get a better model 3 series. Which in turn will be a more of an all rounder to use as a daily, shopping trips, etc.

I definitely agree with you on that one, especially if one don't really need the space of the 3 series. If I had to choose, I would definitely take the 1 over a 3 for daily driver purposes, but then I'm the kinda person who will end up choosing the 3, if it means getting more value out of my money. Say a budget of R150k, gives me the option between a 118i/120i or a newer model, similar km's 320d msport, I will go with the 320d.

Anyway, the bigger cars always seem to get hit with depreciation more than the smaller models.
Like 7 series worse than 5, 5 worse than 3, 3 worse than 1.

It's definitely not just you.

Look at how much a 320D M sport costs compared to a 120D of the same year, and same millage. In Jan when i was looking for a new car, i noticed the 1 series always held 10-20k more value.

So for less money you get a bigger car, newer engine (lci 320d has the 135kw engine) and bigger boot, over the smaller but sportier looking (coupe looks) but worse interior (have you seen the dash of a 1 with out climate control) so i ended up going for a 3 Series.

for 150K you might find a very clean pre lci M sport, or a very clean lci but exclusive model 3 series.
