:fencelook:I was surfing the net reading about leather and I came across this on a diffrent forum ,and I was wondering ?
Are the german cows halal?

This leter was a post on the forum, it makes you wonder

Leather

Salaam Alaykum everyone. I cross ilnked this with the Muslim group just in case.

Im curious about leather and in particular, whether it is haram or halal to use leather from an animal if it wasnt killed correctly. Naturally I assume that it would be Haram however this brings me to a predicament I have with leather goods. I just got a motorbike jacket from a friend and naturally, its leather, and as far as I am aware of no Muslims make leather jackets or halal leather, that is provided to such companies. Is it permitted to wear this jacket? Furthermore, I have a friend who has a leather jacket made out of pig hide. This person isnt a Muslim but would this jacket be haram, considering its not being eaten or anything.

Muslim are not permitted to consume (eat) anything from an animal that isn't Halaal. So what does Halaal actually mean? It means permissible. The opposing term is Haraam which means non permissible. This term isn't just used for the purpose of food or animals as mentioned above.

It is not Haraam to make use of leather from animals that aren't slaughtered in a Halaal manner. Again, the requirement for Halaal animals is purely for consumption. So wearing a jacket, or a belt for instance does not need to be from a Halaal animal.

Many people throw things out of context and assume that they can apply the same rulings across the board.

It would as ridiculous as stating that I cannot use a paint brush which is made out of bristle since this is derived from pig. Islam forbids the consumption of pig meat and not the fact that one uses items that are derived from such sources.

very interesting topic... i would suppose it comes down to the individual and their views. like everything else in life, would i support a product if it was made using child labour for example. its hor far your belief goes and at the end of the day if i feel refraining from using that product is inline with what i believe then i wont use it.

Interesting it is.
Abmi0000 has provided a good explanation.
It would not be a problem to use however I do know that pig leather and such we are not allowed to use at all as pig is totally forbidden for us.
I made an enquiry and was told that with the cow leather we have no prOblem as was told I would be given a proper explanation tomorrow (Sunday) after which I will post the feedback

Funny enough my granddad asked me the same question in the week and I basicly told him what abmi said and that if it was pig then would stay completely away from it

the interesting thing is that people will just do what suits them, not what they say they believe

if you actually look at what pig and its byproducts are used for, and if pig was forbidden, most people would just ignore that "fact".

medicine (eg, insulin, heart valves), cigarettes, paint, yogert, shampoo, fabric softner, etc, etc, etc

as they say, go big or go home. if you not gonna do something right, dont do it at all

"forbidden for you is the MEAT of swine"..........
don't over complicate things......
or the MJC or ICSA would be certifying luxury German sedans as Halaal.
wonder what mod would be faster : a MJC mod or an ICSA mod

very interesting.....

so from abmi's explaination[which is very good without complicating things] it seems 'halaal' and 'haraam' has to do mainly with a person consuming that product?

i do understand the pig thing as the animal as a whole being forbidden by the religion and one shouldnt consume.

but where im a bit confused is a cow, one can consume beef if it is halaal. ok, but what makes that beef halaal? to my knowledge[and please correct me if i am wrong] its the way the animal is killed i.e as quick and pain free while respecting the animal in front of the eyes of the 'All Mighty'? or is there more that i am unaware off?

so wouldnt the whole leather thing be haraam cos fair enough we didnt eat it but that animal was not killed the 'halaal' way, yet we are using a product of it, my confusion here is.....doesnt the 'halaal' and 'haraam' have to do with the killing of the animals?

perhaps my understanding isnt 100% correct?

Simply, the manner in which the cow, sheep etc is slaughtered is what determines Halaal from Haraam,

There is a certain way and prayer that must be read before an animal is slaughtered.

There are other items to consider before slaughtering too, however, for the purpose of this thread's initial question, I believe that it has been answered.

In summary: The consumption of meat or any other item for that manner needs to be halaal for any Muslim to eat. The external use of animal skin, etc. does not follow the same ruling.

Well said.

For interests sake, i googled pig by-products, and this came up:

http://benatlas.com/2009/09/185-products-made-from-a-single-pig/

Dont overcomplicate it, in its simplicity Halaal is the manner in which a permissible animal is slaughtered. Kla.
