All my cars have actually had a sunroof, even the Kia... with the Kia, I seriously questioned it and decided to get one with a sunroof as it was the top of the range spec for the Picanto and would help with resale value... After using it for a couple of years, a sunroof is awesome to have!
In summer, it is great to have it open in the morning and evening to get some nice air into the car when it is not blistering hot outside - can turn the AC off then.
During the day while driving, having it on tilt can be nice as it helps pull air out of the car and that helps draw air in through the vents and allows for better airflow I feel.
In summer, if parking in the sun I almost always left the sunroof open a bit or at least on tilt to help rid the hot air from the car - opening the sunroof fully when getting into a hot car helps get rid of the hot air which has built up in the car a lot quicker than the AC and helps the AC get to the set temp quicker as well.
In winter, it is nice to have it open and get some extra warmth into the car or open the sunroof a little when it gets warmer midday.
Also as mentioned, I'd rather have the sunroof slightly open or on tilt to get some airflow as opposed to the main windows as I feel it is safer.
I had to oil / lube the sunroof on the Kia once as it was getting a bit noisy and was done for free by my mechanic at the time. Never had any issues with any of the sunroof's I had.
As for windnoise, well, on the Kia the car was soo noisy that the sunroof did not make much of a difference. The Audi I found was noisier than the sunroof on the BMW, but when driving around town it is not much of an issue as speeds aren't as high as on the highway. When I get on the highway, either close the sunroof or have it on tilt. Noise isn't too bad on tilt but can always be closed for longer trips.
When buying another BMW, unless its a steal of a price it needs to have a sunroof and xenon or LED's. Non negotiable as it makes for a much easier sale and helps with resale a bit and it is a feature which I really like. As for the Xenon / LED, well fuck - can't see without light and the projectors from Xenons through light much better than the reflectors for halogens, not to mention the extra lumen which a xenon puts out compared to a halogen. It's just safety, as well as a bit being for looks of the car. Xenon projectors look soo much better than reflectors.
