Interested in 2010 X3 2.0D YourThoughts & experiences

Hi Gents,

I am interested in buying a X3 2.0d 2010 model, with 98000kms exclusive pack with panaromic roof. I just wanted to know what are the common faults on these type of cars and any issues i should be aware of?

Fuel consumption as well as maintenance after the motor plan? your comments will be appreciated. I am also considering a 320d but want to compare the 2 in terms of family car, fuel consumption, reliability and power.

The car has no comments on motorplan.FSH.

3 months ago I got myself a 2011 320d E90 automatic with 83000km on the clock.

I did 9000km with the car since then and I must say that I absolutely enjoy the car. I average about 16km/l in town and get (at times) 22km/l on the open road,

It's a very save vehicle, and good value for money.

I think the x3 just has more space overall and by default would be a more suitable family vehicle.

From what I've read and heard, tyre wear on x3s are an issue and uneven wear can cause nonsense with the gearbox etc.

Is it the E83 or F25 ? They can have issues with the transfer case on x drive if the proper run flat tyres are not used or if tyres are mixed up. I have a 2011 F25 30d and absolutely love it. I think the 20d engines are pretty bullet proof. Not sure if they suffer from turbo issues. There is a big difference in ride and handling between E83 and F25. The E83 has a harsh suspension where the F25 is very refined and sporty.

I have done over 100 000 kms in my F25 X3 20d. Fantastic car that has cost MP just 0.28c/km in maintenance over the last 2yrs.

Prior to the X3 I had a 2010 320d (E90) and did 135 000 km in that car from new. Not a days hassle and if I had the spare cash right now i'd buy another 320d in a heart beat.

Tyre wear wise on the X3 with split sized 19" tyres I got 58000km's out of the last set of Goodyear Excellece RF's. That's not bad in my book but pressures must be carefully monitored. I use the "full load" pressures in the front tyres all the time and the rears about 0.2 bar below full pressures all the time. The ride is a little harsher with "bump thump" over catseyes and the like but if you run BMW recommended pressures you WILL wear out the tyres on the shoulders well before the centre is 2/3rds done. Bitter experience.

Same applied to the 320d in re tyre pressures. Last set of Bridgestone RF's (17incn split on the Sportpack) got be 43000 kms. No-one at SMG Pmb would believe the mileage I got off the front tyres until I produced the receipts :rollsmile: Bottom line, BMW recommended pressures are too low and imho are made as such to try to offset the naturally harsh ride that low profile RF's will inherently give.

Comparatively, it would depend on the size of your family. The x3 is great for a family vehicle and has a large boot. The 320d suffers in that department and going away for the weekend self catering means a trailer behind the 320d.

The 320d is a more "selfish" vehicle biased towards the driver. Lovely car from that perspective whereas the X3 is a far more sedate drive. Still plenty of "get up and go" but you will probably find yourself in cruise mode in the x3 while in a 320d you will want to press on more (and its rewarding when you do :=)

You have a great choice to make because imho you can't go wrong with either:rollsmile:

Thanks WIDEOPN-X3,raise: your feedback is excellent and yes my initial thoughts were on getting the 320d, my wife likes the X3 as well, so still deciding. I love the drive on the 320d. In terms of family car the X3 stands out.:ty:

Thank you :ty: That is my other option, a 2011 320d, I lobe the drive and the vehicle. just in 2 minds of getting it. Appreciate your feedback budraise:

Is it just me, or does the X3 seem to have less rear leg room than a 3 series?

Also remember that an SUV has more relaxed drive than a sports car/sedan etc. You are able to see further, and are able to anticipate danger far easier. As a daily, and SUV is a must have IMO.

I have a 2007 e83 2.0d. Its done 400000 kms now. Still original, even the radiator hoses. Car still goes like bomb. I had an issue with the xfer box but it was my fault,when I bought it I was led to believe it had been serviced and the xfer box etc had life long oil in!! It was empty!
I then broke both my prop shafts at Chimes playing on the sand dunes giving the big 4x4 guys a hard time. :rollsmile:
Its been one of the best vehicles I've ever bought, all round, from driving all over Botswana, in the delta,sand, water etc, to open freeway.
I wish BMW would bring out one with high and low range, it would be a hands down winner.
