Ignition coil recall

Hi guys, so it turns out I have the bremi 223 ignition coils in my e46, and apparently BMW recalled these. Now when I called the dealer they said yes, if you have bremi ignition coils you need to replace them with bosch ones, in my mind this should be FREE! but the guy from the dealers said I need to pay for it?! http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/images/smilies/Top24/argh.gif

Has anyone done this or have any info for me?

Highly unlikely you'll get BMW to sort out it at no charge!

Can't recall exact pricing, but Midas has Bosch ignition coils at about half the price of the stealerships. Also, I think Goldwagen stock E46 coils too.

BMW doesnt do free in this country, North America yes, but here no because SA consumers have no teeth.

Basically they can make any defective shit they like, fit it to a couple of hundred thousand cars and not worry about it because the customer must pay in the end. The thing that particularly pisses me off is they then go and make a profit on the replacement parts too........

AArgh, this gets me all hot under the collar thinking about it.

AHHHH man what a load of BS... knowing my luck even if I do replace them, I'll still have that annoying rough idle.. BTW does anyone know if you can wrap them insulation tape to test the insulation because apparently thats the problem they have>?>

I assume that your E46 is out of motorplan? If so then I can sort of understand this, but still a bitter pill to have to swallow. Yep, rather than buying them from the agents buy them from Midas or a similar parts place - will be much kinder to the wallet!!

Insulation tape would probably catch fire, it's soft PVC.

You could try large diameter shrink sleeving, it both insulates well and is heat resistant.

So was that your idea rick?

Yep, if you want you can also try a good coat of the spray silicone which works but doesnt last, but good for a test.

Could I try silicon spray and cover with heat shrink?

LOL I just want to be sure it stays insulated for a good while till I can afford new coils

I suggest you have the codes read first or at least as well, just to be sure it is definitely the coils or just he coils, as there are quite a number of things that could also be causing a rough idle.

DONT use the ones from Goldwagen! They are also Bremi and if you are lucky they will last a week!!!

Strange I got Bosch ones from Goldwagen, was given a choice though, either Bosch or Valeo, both of which are manufacturers of BMW electrical components, went with Bosch as they where the cheaper ones.

We got three Bremi ones from Goldwagen for my dads E39 523i and everyone of them packed up in less than a week.

Now the Goldwagen we bought them from wont refund us and says we must take it to head office but recon we probably wont have any joy with them either.

Yeah the bremi one's are doggy doodoo, hence the recall I guess. The symptoms on the recall were rough idle, failing emissions test, and check engine light coming on intermittently.

When is a reasonable time for the dealership to stop supporting recall items?
I mean you cant expect them to replace a cracked dash on an e30 now, even though they all cracked eventually.

Im in the same boat too, previous owner didnt have the door seals replaced/repaired under recall and now they failing on this car.

And you dont wanna know how much coupe door seals cost.
