My "ou toppie" has been driving the e39 M5 as his daily since I can remember, once you get use to the car(the power and flat torque curve is so addictive) the consumption is not to bad 12l/100km, I drove it for a week once as my "daily" and it was EPIC ................. at 17l/100km .

M5 FTW

I would definitely take the M..... oh wait, I have one!!!

I am extremely biased in my opinion, have never driven a 550, so can't compare.

What I can say is that the M5 is an easy car to drive, pulls like a steam train and has everything you need from a car even for its age.

Buy a good 2001 and up model and you won't be disappointed.

Hope it helps.

Over and out.

Not many people can afford an M car and this is a special one at that. If you find a decent FL one I reckon your life will be much more complete.

The 550 is the manual version badged 550i in full M trim too

Is it just me, or is your mind already made up?
:roflol:

As a daily I think the 550i would be the least likely to disappoint. i would say that using the M5 as a daily would spoil you for life.

Plus stacking km on an M5... :yuck:

E39 m5 if you want something special, one of the most amazing cars ever (and ive even never driven one:fencelook:)
but i also disagree with putting dailly kms on it:thumbdo:
also more aftermarket support then the 550i from what i can see, if thats your thing

It doesn't really matter as they both gonna cost you more or less the same to maintain, so just get the newer 550i. :) On the other hand, the e39 M5 is such a complete car. And a true

car.

Considering that you can afford a 550i or an M5 its safe to assume you can probably maintain it too.

In that case the M5 is the one (even thou I voted 550i due to its versatility).

Maintenance is key. Will e39 m5 parts be readily available in 10 years?

I haven't driven an E39 M5, but a 550i Manual is absolutely epic! It feels awesome, so much torque. For its size its surprisingly keen to be thrown around.

As a usual trend though, M cars have more soul than their series examples.

In my opinion both cars have its pros and cons:
M5 Pros
An epic cars with few rivals
Legendary 5.0L ///M Power
Presence like very few on the road.
Cons
The older option
More chance of maintenance to be done.

550i Pros
The newer option.
Will probably have lesser Kms
Newer technology and features.
Cons
Can easily be mistaken for the 525i, no real presence unless it has the M sports package.
Doesn't have that V8 burble like the M5

So my verdict is that the E39 M5 will be my choice, be it head or heart.

In terms of maintenance I think that if you considering either V8s, then maintenance should be secondary as well a fuel consumption.
With regard to mileage, if I owned the M5, I would want to drive it everyday.

They don't call it the ///M President for nothing.:thumbs::thumbs:

E39 M5 mainly because if you get that 550i , things will be fun for the first month or two , and then it'll hit you , you could have had an M5. No one's gonna look at you in your 550i , you won't find kids walking past your car just to run to the back to see that its a 550i . You more likely to get that with the M5. And that diff in the M5 sets it apart , you can light the rears up and have a smile from side to side not just on one side . Not a fan of the E60's so I'm very biased. Either way you gonna get a good car , its a BMW .

I agree, the E39 M5 really does look absolutely fantastic!! Has a great stance! Way more special looking car in comparison to the E60 :fencelook:

Both cars are epic..........and mind is not mind up yet, but for the fact that I want something fun to go to work in every day.......love the 325iS but the tax man seems to have a different opinion when it does to value.........
Planning some serious test drives

I drove an M as a daily driver.

They are heart inspiring all forms of awesome, brutal acceleration all of those good things

BUT...

as a daily driver, it sucks

Suspension is too hard, seats on long distance (say 3km in 2 hours traffic :biglol: ) the car really does not please.

The navigation is terrible in comparison to modern equipment.

An E60 with comfort seats and a manual box with a N62 will just be heaven.

Yea ok its going to suck on the track in comparison, all of those sort of things, but these are two very very different cars.

The other thing is, a E60 is very respectable as stock, and needs no mods other then perhaps a set of wheels.

E39's are either modded to hell, or are stock stock standard, with low or fairly low KM's...

Thing is, if you life in JHB, and as a daily drive, you are going to be doing km's, and in affect, stuffing up a low km car and turning it into a high km car, which you paid a premium for, which means that you will be loosing that value.

Therefore, by association, E60 N62B48 FTMFW....

I may be saying this because my standard before the M5 was the MCoupe who's ride could be compared to a billiard ball rolling a a across a tiled biker bar floor. But the M5 is a comfortable car. Gear change and clutch are light. Seats are supportive and ultra adjustable. I have all three seat settings programmed for me from comfort cruize, to sports mode. My only concern would be if I had a traffic bumper to bumper commute I would be wishing I had bought an automatic charade and kept the M5 for week-ends.

Ok, as I bought a stock standard e39 M5 with 140k on the clock little over 6 weeks ago, I will no doubt be biased. The M brings such a huge Smile and grin factor.

When I get in the car I feel important ( a bit like putting on a designer suit) when I get in my e60 530d I also feel good ( a bit like wearing a truworths suit) but part of me knows that i fit the other suit better.

I would cry if I had to use th M5 as a daily drive though. Not because the M5 is undriveable ( in fact of all my M cars the M5 is by far the most comfortable) but because an M deserves to be appreciated and I believe if you drive the car every day not only are you adding mileage you will stop appreciating the car.

I have spent R20k making the M5 perfect, and for R20k i have done ALOT. So dont be to scared on maintenance.

If I could only have one 5 series, I would buy the M5 and a toyota tazz.... I wouldnt care that 99 percent of the time I was in the tazz, the 1 percent of M5 time would Ohhhh so make up for it.
