iDrive restarting

I have a E90 2005 330i with iDrive Professional Navigation, my problem that started yesterday, that when listening to Radio, the sound goes off and then after a while comes back for a few seconds, irrespective whether its Radio or CD or Aux, it seems that the iDrive stops working as the iDrive controller and on screen stops responding. The display screen does not go off or restarts. Tried to reset the iDrive by pressing the two eject and mute buttons, which does reset as shown on the display, but the problem is still there. Need to also say that the bluetooth is not enabled, and the idrive navigation is very difficult as it looks like the idrive is restarting. Any ideas?

Yep,

It sound like you have a CCC (Car Communication Computer) failure. The same happened years ago on my E90 325i when BMW tried to update the software of the iDrive. Fortunately my car was still under motorplan/warranty.

You can try your luck, act ignorant and ask BMW to update your iDrive to a latest software version "CIP updates" because it is "crashing". This should be cheap as they simply plug your car into a computer, the computer diagnoses the problems and downloads appropriate software to fix it.

Chances are the above might not work if the actual CCC is broken. In that case, they will have to replace the module.

Budget 2 days minimum for them to install a new CCC and software update. Mine took them 1 week back in 2006 because at the time they did not know what was the problem.

I have the exact same problem. After a bit of digging it seems as if it is the bluetooth that is the culprit, even though it is turned off. I've tried it with it being on and off, it makes no difference.
My cousin had the same problem in his e60 550i, which has the same system, and BMW quoted him R8k to fix.

Luckily I could convince my dealer to fix mine as I only recently purchased the car, will find out if they can give me some info on what exactly they've replaced and done to fix it.

Ps. To my knowledge, you can just unplug the unit for the time being to temporarily solve the problem. Unless you have a CD changer in the boot...

So I just thought I would give you guys a update on what exactly they've replaced.

Believe it or not, but I only recently got my car back, after having a few loan cars and such, but yeah finally got it back. I've only had the car since taking delivery of it in early October, for a total of 7 weeks, the rest of the time its been at the dealer for repairs.

Getting back to the repairs, initially the MULF was replaced. After which they proceeded to replace the entire Head Unit. They then had trouble coding the system for an entire week. Eventually they replaced the Towbar Module (as I have an electrically operated towbar)...

So the electronics in the car seemed a bit dodgy, lets hope that this is all sorted and that there is no underlying problem that caused this.

So after all that and a parts bill (which is luckily not for me) of approximately R27k, everything seems to working as intended. Let me also add that this price is what BMW charge internally, so I can only imagine what the retail cost would be.

The one thing that I am very happy about is that the new head unit seems to be a bit better than the previous one, in terms of colours and picture quality. The iDrive system seems a lot faster and more responsive, also the layout is a bit better, so I would assume that it has the latest software on that addressed all those issues.

In summary, I hope nobody ever gets this kind of failure when the car is out of motorplan...

If your car has bluetooth then its the bluetooth module faulty you can bridge it but you will not have your bluetooth function untill you replace it but if you dont have the use of it i can disable it for you temporally

They was no need of changing the head unit that problem caused buy Mulf (Bluetooth module) that's all sometimes Dealers they don't have good people to code their cars very well also to do a proper Diagnose they do Try nd Error and any faulty they do they will charge you.
So u will find for them to replace the head unit it was because they damaged it thru their try and error then they will tell you it was faulty.

Hi guys, (and girls, I hope I'm not the only one)

I drive a 2006 335i Coupe which i had since new. Has only 114 000km on the clock and still looks great. Every day I see it I still think, "what a beauty".

I love my car and it gave me great service until it turned 8 in October last year. The water pump broke and R12k later it's as good as new.

Just before Xmas die radio started acting up, same as cool4u2b, sound goes on and off. The problems just got worse and now the whole iDrive is almost completely unusable.

Took it in this week to a very good BMW techie in Centurion and got the very bad news that the iDrive and Bluetooth controller(?) needs to be replaced.

The quote, R23000!!!

Eish!!! I know it's probably time to replace my car but I can't sell it before forking out the 23k and I suppose the car is worth only about R200k. Is it possible to buy second hand iDrive and BT controllers? Any suggestions? Should I get a 2nd quote? Would a software upgrade maybe fix it? Please give suggestions.

Guys, check out ebay and rather buy a iDrive CIC retrofit kit. It works out cheaper plus you get a much better system the iDrive CCC.

No problem. Just search E90 CIC retrofit and you will find kits like these: LINK

Coding is not at all difficult, and since your car already has nav and voice activated it should be plug and play, though most of these sellers offer a coding service to pre-program the unit to your VIN.

Thanks again, I will email one of the suppliers. My car has the 2-button iDrive. A menu button and a voice control button. If I buy a newer model CIC iDrive it will obviuosly not have the same buttons, probably more. Will that nit be a problem to fit back?

CIC should work with the two button controller, but if you are handy with a dremel tool you can carve out the shape of the new controller.
