Personally I still don't see why we can't just fill up ourselves at filling stations, like they do in most other countries.

Garages for the most part follow the Aouth African motto of Zero Accountability.

I took my E30 320i to be filled and the guy topped up the water in the radiator as well. As has closed the bonnet I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the radiator cap was not put back on.

The pump jockey had LOST the cap within the 2 minutes that he had topped up the radiator and could not find it for love or money, so he just decided to leave it and not even tell me. To this day I do not know where that cap went and how he managed to loose it so comprehensively.

When the owner of the petrol station, who was twice my size got involved it became some what heated and being the rather skinny and timid 18 year old that I was back then, I realised I was not going to do my self any favors by getting into a punch up with this guy over a R20 filler cap and drove away.

But even though it was their fault, he was immediately down my throat over it and hes stupid fc*king staff member could have done some serious damage to my car from that.

Had that happen to my dad with our diesel jeep... Had a flat bed organised, jeep towed to jeep, tank removed & flushed & car returned to us with a full tank of diesel & all towing & jeep expenses paid by the garage... I think it helped that the owner of the garage lived across the road from us.. and my family had been going there for years..

I was getting my E30 filled & water & oil checked before coming up to JHB the one year... Luckily I was out the car watching the guy, he saw that the water was a bit low... and then went to get the water can... & proceded to open the oil filler when I saw this & shouted at him... he was going to fill the water into the oil...

He looked like he was drunk or something....

thats the last time I ever got my oil & water checked at a petrol station

This is why personally, I check my car's fluids myself, use my own electric pump to keep the tyres at the correct pressures - basically the less they fiddle with my car the better!!!

This last Saturday, I pull into the Shell Garage and tell the attendant to fill up 95. She then asks me petrol or diesel :slap:

Guys, I have been working in this industry for 20 years now, and the horror stories I can tell you, here are a few things to check when you pull up to a pump.

1.) Make sure the attendant knows what you want, let him repeat what you want.
2.) Watch to see what nozzle he/she picks up.
3.) Make sure the pump Zero's before they start dispensing.

I was at that Engen @ Tygervalley before too, put in R200 with my old beetle. Since I was heading to the beach, didnt have my wallet with me. The guy put in the nozzle and walked away. When the tank clicked the nozzle when full, the total stood at R426.

I told the guys I only had R200, and that I had ASKED for R200 so I wouldn't pay for the rest. Had a big fight with the guy who said he would drive behind me to my house so I could get my wallet so I could pay.

Some of these garage owners are real asses!!

@Menno11 If it was one of my clients they would have probably told you they will siphon off the extra R226 before you could leave, it is indirectly still their property till paid in full. As for the manager asking for full payment, he only works for a boss and has to please explain if there any shortages (I am sure you would not want to pay for a other's mistake.) And dare they make the attendant pay for that kind of mistake, they have the unions running around on the site causing all sorts of problems.

Here is something interesting I have seen over the years that you might not know. When service is slow at a Fuel site, A lot of people get upset, some race off angry that they had to wait a few minutes as all the attendants are busy helping other customers. Some get very rude with the attendants because they had to wait a minute or two for service. But follow these guys to a place like Makro, and they are willing to wait for 30mins to get to a till. (Go Figure)

I usually just try where possible to stop at a pump that only has the fuel I need (like I would stop a pump that only has 95, then it is not possible for the guy to get it wrong)

Simple for the fluids, do it yourself at home once a week. Every saturday I check both my cars myself.

For the fuel, get up and do it with the guy...

I agree, each weekend when I was my car I also wipe down the engine covers, so I just use that time to check fluids.

Gives extra peace of mind and avoids wasting time at the pumps. Gives me the oppurtunity to watch the attendant. I always check fluids myself at the pumps when needed. Had the experience where they don't put caps back on properly, oil all over the show.

I can rememberwhen I drove my 320d the same happened to me.
So after throwing a MOERSE fit, and having the bmw roadside assist guys come to help me sort out the problem and drain the tank, I decided it was a sign...
So, about 2 months after I sold the diesel and baught my 325i. :)

on my car and most cars everything should be checked cold anyway kind of pointless to do it at the petrol station... i also find my tire pressures stay more constant if u check them at home... i think its because im not constantly putting new air in so the smaller particles that defuse threw the tire have already gone :)

oil must be checked at operating temp, not cold

not saying that I would let them near my oil filler cap, or worse they remove the radiator cap, get some nice air into that system :)

There is no I ever let the guys touch anything, especially not the expansion tank cap.

Then I see other people there with the engines open and the guys filling up the reservoir with cold tap water all the while spilling water in the engine bay,

My sentiment exactly. Keep the hood closed @ the filling station.
