Hi guys. BMW apparently dont understand the concept of the TPF sensor. They reckon its part of the MAF sensor and tried to sell that to me at 7k. Needless to say iys been a frustrating day as my car now definitely seems worse. Looks like the problem has actually increased after reattaching the EGR pipe. So thats coming off as soon as I get home. I did get a new fuel filter from BMW as there actually cheaper than gold wagon (400 bucks) so ill change that and report back. Will try again with the sensor tomorrow.
Update 2: Went out on the highway to the Westrand and back so that I could properly focus on how the car reacts in terms of various throttle positions. Very unpredictable it seems. (I bypassed the EGR again first.)
Cut out still happens at (violent) full throttle, but at (normal) full throttle she sometimes shoots like a bat out of hell, and at other times she seems to be starving of either fuel or air.
60-80 percent throttle seems to be stable and fun, but feels somewhat limited in terms of power.
Also, the throttle only actually starts responding properly at about 25-30 percent depression.
After driving hard against a steep incline, I backed off the pedal slightly and pressed down again after a few seconds. The car felt like the engine was working at only about 50% power even though throttle was almost flat down again. This lasted only a few seconds, then she found herself again. The temp did not rise above 92 at all. Digital temp (test 19.7) constantly stays between 89-92, so it cant be a heating issue.
There is one more important thing. I preface this by saying that I have noticed this when I first bought the car as well, but there has always been something else wrong too, so I always assumed it was part of the other problem. And then I think I got used to it, and only realized now that it is still present: The car does not have the ability to maintain a cruising speed on the highway. She only accelerates and continues to do so until I back off on the throttle (to a point where one instinctively feels that she should be able to maintain cruising speed). She does not though, but instead keeps on losing speed until throttle is increased at which point she accelerates again.
All of this, especially with code 0120, does seem to point to a throttle issue as you guys have mentioned. However, I do think that if it's not that, it almost certainly has to be a fuel supply problem. Hopefully one that is due to a faulty fuel filter as I am on my way to replace that now. I will also clean the MAF again just for good measure, since it has been a few months.
Any opinions on any these matters are most welcome.
Thanks gents
