Hallo everyone,

so i recently fitted some new 17 inch rims on my e36, and now my
right rear wheelarch is scraping the outside of my tyre when i go through a dip or when it's loaded in the back.

What can cause this? and i heard that i might have to "roll" the wheel arch. What is this? and can it be done?

Thanks in advance for any help

I had that with my old '94 BM ( Were there before I bought it.. )

You've fitted tires that are too big for your car's frame, they will need to "roll" ( Bend the arches outward a bit ) the wheel arches.

It's not a hard job, but if it's too bad, it's very unsightly.

Stock BMW's are a thing of beauty, I don't know why people would modify them. :(

thanks for the reply.

the guy at the panelbeater informed me, that they bend the
inside of the outer edge of the wheel arch inside. and then it won't scrape anymore.

he did tell me that the paint might crack at the bottom edge of the wheel arch.

i will have it checked out.

also, i have seen these beemers with 19 inch wheels on, so i can't understand why my 17 teens are touching.

I assume your car is dropped?i used a jack to push out my arches.i used a 16 mil ply wood and put it between the jack and arch.it takes on the shape of the arch and you dont end up with kinks in your body.just place the jack strategically and use logic and you will end up with great arches.you didnt say how wide your tyres are.if your car is dropped maybe just use 225's at the back.with rolled arches and 225's it will never scrape again

thanks julz.

strange thing is my wheels are 17inch with 215/45 tyres on it.

on the left side it clears the arch allright, but on the right it is very tight. i will go to the panelbeaters and have them roll the lip, hopefully that will sort it out.

the jack technique sounds interesting, but i am a bit scared to do that. i have also heard about a coke bottle technique, but it all sounds a bit dodgy. lol

I am running 225/45/17 wheels right round without any issues. The wheelarches haven't been touched. Could it be that your car might have had a shunt on the one side and the fender is sitting slightly in. Have your rear suspension checked as well.

Yeah sounds like the arches are not symmetrical. Not maybe the shocks that are finished/springs sagging??...although it should wear more or less the same....interesting

I ordered a set of 18 inch narrow and wides for my E36. Tyres: 235/40/18 at the back and 225/40's in front. Car's not dropped so I hope I don't encounter any problems. Wish me luck :mmm:

There is more to wheels then just the diameter. What is the offset of the new wheels you have bought?

My bet is that people who dont care to even consider offset when buying wheels probably also dont care for any suspension maintenence. Anything could be wrong under there that could cause this kind of problem.

On every bmw the right side of the car is always lower than the left. It is the way our roads slope hence y our cars are made like that. Its sounds to me that the offset of the rim is incorrect. I hav rollin machine to roll fenders so if u want we can do it for u. Btw are these original rims or aftermarket.
