How to launch your steptronic?

Hey guys.

Was just wondering how do you get the "perfect" launch with your steptronic?

Do you change every gear manually? Or just 1 to 2 with the step & switch over to the manual? Full auto?

I saw somewhere you should put in steptronic, use brakes & give some gass, this your still standing still but the revs will climb. You need to keep her on +-4000rpms, drop the brake & floor it, switch to second & then leave it for the auto box.

I'm thinking the the brake & gass thing can't be too good for your ride?

wish i can help. sorry man.
my reason being cars don't launch the same because they have the same gearbox, neither are all steps across various generations (e46/e90) the same. the brake-boost launch you describe was explained by Freerider on another thread...and apparently works well with ST turbo cars...:mmm:

For example: My deeply personal view is: I do not support this method of launching on a 335 twin turbo purely because boost comes on rather rapidly on hard acceleration in DS mode followed with a great launch all things considered (tyres, Rd surface & whether you have a decent tune or not). Doing brake-boosting while the car is rolling at (30,40 - 60) is unecessary & abuse of a very competent car. But i admit for the couple of days i owned a 323 manual i did do the wrrrrrrrrrrrr boost thing & everything about how the car sounds tells you that engine is not a happy clappy - small wonder she ended up on the scrap pile in a street drag.

The brake boosting FR referred to is for for Turbo'ed cars.

I should've been a bit more specific. How should I launch from a standing start? I guess on a rolling run I should just floor it & the kick back switch will put me in the right gear?

That is what i would do - floor it ....

But sometimes the step changes gears at the wrong time...their are times you want it to stay in 3rd gear just a little longer but it is too eager to save fuel & move on to the cruiser shifts...so it depends. If you are quick with the manual switch you might get a better pull...but i am way to nervous when it comes down to the wire...eyes on the Rd...steering as tight as possible...heee...& hope for hell its a win.

I am pretty sure that doing a brake stand till 4000RPM will damage the gearbox fairly quickly :(

Yeah the same thing went through my mind. I guess the best launching will be no launching for me. This auto tranny will just cost me money.

My opinion, and purely my opinion. Put it in 1 and floor it, change it manually from there. But come off the accelerator a bit before changing, as it sometimes delays the changes, due to the engine going at full speed.

The problem with letting the box do the changing is that there is the Adaptive Gear Shift thing that tries to think for you (And predict your next move).

So if you were "driving miss daisy" 5 min before your "fast and furious" moment, it'll get "confused" :hammerhead:

Yeah, I've seen that. You change & nothing happens & your like "WTF", change again & then all of a sudden it's in third coming from first :nono:

I just floor it atm. & pressing that kick back switch makes me smile. A lot.
